Funny watching Dak Prescott of the Cowboys,play against the Dolphins.. He looks good... The backup doesnt have to be hated... I remember we had Leftwich, Garrard, and Gray... All capable of playing... None of them was hated...It was a comfortable feeling to have, and know that it didnt matter if Leftwich went down we had Garrard ... Thats the point im trying to make..

Isn't he playing with the 1's? That's a veteran offense he's working with. Don't get me wrong, he looks good out there but it's preseason.

It's very possible day will see the field 10x's more than our backup qb during the season, so I say yes it was a good investment.

In two weeks, there will be at least half a dozen backups better than Chad.

 

Right now, Kansas City is hanging on to 5 QBs, and will likely keep 3.  Maybe taking a chance on Aaron Murray isn't a bad idea.  And that's just off the top of my head.

Maybe the Colts will release our home grown Stephen Morris?

 

At least half of the above will be available in a couple weeks, plus a few more.  At least 5 of them have to be better than Henne long term, and a couple could probably be better on our team by midseason.

You and I do think there are better alternatives.  So, pick your guy, explain why Caldwell should pull the trigger.  The loser of Fales/Shaw intrigues me, as does Aaron Murray.

What a ridiculous statement.  A backup QB is 'holding the team back'.  

 

 

He's keeping Allen from getting valuable reps and would be occupying an extremely valuable roster spot where we could otherwise field a talented player. He's also keeping them in this perpetual situation of knowing that if Bortles goes down, his backup is pure trash scared to throw downfield for the most part.

Im saying the chances are better than throwing a 6th round rookie out there in the middle of the season. This is not a glowing endorsement of Henne just an acceptance of reality. We both know what it would take for them to eat his salary, barring that he'll be here.

 

 

I'm not even sure his chances would be better than if Allen were the backup placed on a fast track with all the reps he could get. At least Allen in comfortable throwing downfield where Oley's scheme can stay intact. Wtih Henne you do get his experience, but his reluctance to throw more than 5 yards downfield makes it very tough to win games. Allen is just raw and needs reps to learn how to not throw INTs. The rest of his game looks fine.

If Ponder works out as Gabbert's backup, the 49ers might part ways with Kaepernick. Kaepernick is at the very least several miles better than Henne.

Gabbert is perfect for Chip Kelly because he's able to turn and throw quickly to a spot. That's really all Chip asks of his QB. Gabbert breaks down when he has to tuck the ball and improvise, but that's not really part of Kelly's playbook. Kelly wants the ball out of the qb's hands immediately, and Gabbert has always had a very quick release and a very nice looking spiral. Indeed, as I've said before, Gabbert has a better spiral than Bortles.
