Bowl game matchups

Quote:You can't have your cake and eat it too. While they weren't deserving of playing for a national championship by nature of playing exactly zero ranked teams, NIU and Fresno would have both been worthy BCS bowl teams if they had won out.

One team who is not really deserving of their status as a BCS team is Stanford in my opinion. They lost to unranked Utah and  #25 USC. Sure they won their conference and played a grinder of a schedule, but those are some bad losses. They would have been better off losing to ASU. Then I would respect their standing.

Not deserving? Stanford was the first team to beat then-#2 Oregon - and they did it convincingly. Even before that game, Stanford was ranked in the top 15. Where were you hiding that week?

But the real reason Stanford is in it is the win over ASU. As the Pacific 12 champions, they automatically go to the Rose Bowl.

Just be thankful Northern Illinois didn't ruin another BCS bowl game this year.

Or Fresno State for that matter.

Fresno at least has a legit NFL QB.

Quality of wins is important sure, but so is quality of loss. Stanford has the best record against ranked teams this season. Imagine if Stanford hadn't lost to Utah. They'd have had one hell of a case for playing in the NCG if their only loss was to a surging USC team.

I was speaking in a whimsical hypothetical world where there were no BCS bowl tie ins.

I can't agree on USC, the team without a coach most of the year. Maybe if their one loss was UCLA.

You think UCLA is that much better? Same record. Similar losses. Those are solid teams but not teams that will win the Pac-12 south.

A lot of people thought UCLA was much better during the first half of the season. The conference basically turned upside down with the Oregon loss.

But anyway, do you think Stanford is a good opponent for Michigan State?

Not for me. I don't get into that kind of thing. What would make the bowl season more interesting is a "Who has the edge?" thread for each game.

I think Stanford is the best eligible team. If Oregon had pulled their heads out of their bums and played Arizona seriously, we could have seen an interesting offense vs defense matchup. Stanford doesn't play pretty, but they are a very good team that excels at all aspects of the game.
