I love the idea of Mike Smith returning to Jacksonville.  As promising as some of these other OCs or DCs sound, if it's their first job as an NFL coach, you never really know what you're getting. Mike Smith has been a successful coach in Atlanta. The team's decline was not his fault - it's the bad drafts by Thomas Dimitroff. 

 

I'm a big fan of what Smith did in Jax. Loved that defense.

We don't get lucky like the Panthers with Rivera and Atl with Dan Quinn. We always get screwed when we go the coordinator route. We have to find a proven HC not named Dungy, Cowher, Gruden cus those guys are RAF = Retired as ....

Idk how good Quinn is. Their defense is worse then ours and they have a much more experienced/veteran offense.

Haven't read this entire thread yet.  But I just have to say something before I forget to respond...

 

There are worse HC candidates than Mike Smith.  

 

Just want to point this out:  There was a very strong and vocal group of people that lamented the fact that Mike Smith was lost and JDR was kept.  There's alot of wistful angst about how well JDR is doing in Oakland.  The fact of the matter is that JDR's D fell off the cliff after Mike Smith went to Atlanta.

 

Yeah, Atlanta had it's issues, but that man kept the ship right during the Vick years.  And let's not forget out aweful the Vick years were for Atlanta.  He kept that locker intact and continued to win.  Some of the personell decisions eventually crippled the Falcons.  But Mike Smith was a good head coach and kept that team strong and competitive.

 

This team would be lucky to get him.  He's no loser.  And he has ties to Jacksonville.  I'm not sure that's the way we go, but if we sign him I for one would be pretty dog gone excited about it.

He's not the perfect head coach.  But I think he's a leader of men and doesn't have a history of blowing up a locker room like McDaniels has...  McDaniels blew up the entire bronco team because of his egomaniacal tendancies.  I'm not sure if you lean towards McDaniels, but I just wanted to point that out.

 

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Smith was the head coach during the Falcon meltdown because of a dog fighting ring by the beloved QB.  I think that has to be worth something.  The dude knows how to manage a team.  And he did a great job of adjusting his philosophy to the talent he had.

 

Maybe I'm mis-remembering this...  So I'm not saying I completely know.  But that is my memory of the Mike Smith time during the early years at Atlanta.

I'm not sure you can dismiss Smith just based on his first year at Tampa...  If he's trying to turn the titanic around, you have to give him longer than just 3 games to make a determination.  

 

If you look at his body of work, it's respectable.  Imagine what he could do with a Dave Caldwell type that's getting the groceries for him.  He'd be able to handle the kitchen, in my opinion.

IIRC Smith came after the Vick situation(and Petrino quit), and Matt Ryan was his qb from the very start. Still, he did do a good job with taking a broken franchise and putting the pieces back together.

It's very possible. Caldwell has received praise from pundits and league executives in spades for his drafting and FA acquisition.


I actually think that Dave is an asset in acquiring a quality HC.


Khan would be ill-advised to judge him solely on the team's record.

 

  One prime example that reinforces what you mentioned was the Lions hiring Jaguars Director of Scouting Kyle O'Brien as Director of Player Personnel back in the winter.   The fact that Dave Caldwell hired O'Brien in the first place is a credit to Caldwell.

Gus said very much the same thing when he was hired. (in fact many coaches are quoted saying some version of this Smith quote) but it's a question of actually getting it done. 

 

Smith has a better track record where that is concerned.  He's still a mid-tier guy on my (still being assembled) list of possible coaches. But he'd likely do better with this roster than what we've seen the past two weeks.

Yeah to be fair that quite is fairly standard coach speak.


Looking back at his Falcons teams, he basically let Dirk Koetter do his own thing on offense. On defense he ran his standard vanilla 4-3 with limited pass rushing but eventually altered it to more of 3-4 with bad results. Also his time management was disastrous.


Seems to me like a good figurehead to have but needs strong coordinators to have success.
