Why wait when you know the fate?

 

Say you're in a relationship with a woman. You know you it's not going to work out. Do you wait until the end of the year to do it or just do it when you know? You have no idea if the next relationship will be good or not but you know this one doesn't work for you.

 

I understand that there are emotions in this sport but I also know that the players understand it's a business. 

 

Stop with the feelings. Who cares about them. Winning is all that matters and if Gus is fired, it's because he can't win with this team and it's the next man up.

I love these dissimilar analogies. My take on emotion has to do with play on the field by the players not empathy towards hiring or firing. So my point is whether it is business or not, emotion will impact the team moving forward and if there is no real gain, then what is the point? I don't disagree with you as much as you may believe. It is a performance based business and the HC is measured by W/Ls, but if the reality is there is no real change if he is fired mid-season. Once again, same scheme, same players, and the same assistants remain. Gus is gone, but the footprint stays. This is reality until a new HC is hired in the off-season.

 

I'll leave it at that. We both agree he should be gone, it's just we have different opinions on timing. I honestly don't care when, just that he needs to move along.

You know what firing the coach Mid-Season does?  It sends 2 very clear messages.

 

1. Failure will not be accepted.  Get good, or get gone.

2. The Owner/GM are willing to make the tough choices required to improve this team.

 

If a player has some kind of meltdown because Gus gets let go, then that's a player that probably needs to follow him out the door.

I think if you hire the right guy, this team could be in the playoff hunt as early as next year.  The talent is there to make a run.  The coaching has become the impediment.

Also, no one said "burn it all down".  If anything, it'll be one of the more sought after vacancies given the raw talent on the team, and the proven patience of the GM/Owner.

I don't follow the Bills too much, but I'd venture to guess that when Marrone coached them to 9-7 he wasn't preaching that "getting better" and "having fun" is more important than winning. Im sure Marrone never had a goofy dance celebration after a meaningless regular season win. Every week these players hear Gus and his loser talk. That's why this team loses, because their loser coach has created a culture where it's ok lose.

Completely agree. I believe this team is just a few pieces away. Of course I've had that feeling a few times. First time in quite a few years I find myself contemplating other activities come game day, but still throw myself out there.

Not necessarily them, just the HC. He is a know entity. One decent year in a mediocre division doesn't erase the many poor before that occurred before. I truly believe it is time to move on.

Every time I hear Boselli say that changing a coach mid-season doesn't do any good, I cringe. Sometimes that's the kind of change that's necessary to send a clear message, just like there are times when the team needs to cut a player in order to move forward. Boselli should be well aware of that first hand considering he had a front row seat for the Andre Rison cut that sparked the 1996 run.


I'm not expecting the team to make some magical transformation under an interim if they fire Gus, but it almost certainly couldn't get any worse than what we're seeing now. If it doesn't make a difference, then you've eliminated one candidate from your list of options.

In reality, the odds are better that the current head coach turns things around vs the intern coach.
