Even the 2001 Ravens defense had a bad game, it happens


Not saying we are the Ravens of old but our defense is looking good long term

The D came out flat but call me crazy for saying that if the offense had been able to do at least a little bit of something the defense would have played better. It was 21-0 but the strip sack felt like the momentum could swing but then the offense couldn't get anything going. I consider the D fixed at this point.

The defense is not fixed at all 11 positions yet, but the repair job is almost done.

The pass rush does seem fixed when you consider the youth and the production so far.  They are making plays.  The front 4 are getting pressure and that didn't used to happen.  The Jags are blitzing a lot less and are getting good pressure when they do blitz.  These are all good signs.  The D-line rotation is strong and deep.

That was David Caldwell's top priority in the offseasson. Unlike Gene Smith in 2010, Caldwell knew how to do it and got the right players for all four jobs.

They have extremely high motors. Von Miller wears out the opposing OL and eventually makes huge plays for the defense late in the game. Fowler and Ngakoue will do that if nothing happens early on.

I don't think we are jumping the gun at all.   You can see the talent.   They are both fast, athletic big guys.   When you have that level of talent, all that's missing is production.   Now that we have production, the talent is confirmed.   If and when opponents start watching film and getting better prepared, it'll be up to the coaching staff to teach them some new moves, how to watch film, how to use one move to set up another move, etc.

You and a few others have mentioned coaching. How do you (plural) think they could be utilized more effectively?

I think as the season goes on they will get even better. They are starting to understand the scheme and feed off the interior guys. Your also seeing their stamina get better. As communication and conditioning get better, we'll see the high motor keep on ticking away!

Just imagine if they continue to play with leads.

The biggest coaching-related problem on defense is penalties. If we stop letting offenses get free plays, we will force a lot more punts.

The Indy game was the perfect one to give the young DEs a confidence builder. 

 

Do I think it's premature to declare our pass rush fixed?  Yes.  But, I think that if you look at the investments made, and consider the youth we're starting at either end, it's not unrealistic to think things can only get better.  Barring injuries, I do think we've got the potential to have one of the better tandems in the league.  With all of the younger players contributing, this defense has the potential to be something truly special.  It's not there yet, and you're going to have stumbles like we saw in San Diego, but I think the arrow is pointed up for this group, and a lot of that has to do with the DE play.

As I said, the sad part is this team needs to win now, or else it risks changing schemes that may hinder, if not ruin the development of these guys. It could restrict the kinds of coaches we would get to replace Bradley if it came down to that. To be honest, after the bye, we have Chicago, oakland, Tennessee, KC and Houston. I expect stronger defensive performances.

Hiring a new coach should make the defensive scheme easier. Whoever that guy will be, and I am not going to think about it until after Gus Bradley is fired, he certainly can figure out what we can do with the players we have.

(we know about those things) the coaches need to build on success and not be stubborn to a fault.  The coaches have to eliminate the planning mistakes and learn how to play call for these guys.  I don't want to see more bang our heads into the wall behavior.  Honestly if they learn from the player execution errors and structure play calling to cut down on plays that the players struggle with?  Yeah that.

Fans deserve better. Thanks for all the good times too many are in the past.

It is called growing pains. If coaches stop calling what players struggle with, they will never be good at those plays.

In sports, jumping the gun is second nature these days. Recency bias is the most prevalent phenomenon in pro sports, which is why I enjoyed the well composed historic infusion in the OP. In short, yes, we are jumping the gun, of course we are, it's been only 4 hours of ball to go by. But, we won't be sued, fined, or convicted for jumping the gun. Sports jail understands it's no longer a crime.
