Not true. Here's some key information from an article written on this very subject in Big Cat Country.

 

In 2015 while the Jaguars were behind by between 9-16 points (so, two scores) he threw for just over 1,000 yards with nine touchdowns and seven interceptions. When the Jaguars were losing within one-to-eight points (so, one score) he threw for just over 1,500 yards with 13 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.

 

Twenty-two of Bortles 35 touchdowns were thrown in games where the margin of victory was between zero and seven points with only five being thrown in games where the margin was 15+ points.

 

No one calls Derek Carr's numbers garbage time, but nearly half of his touchdowns were thrown in  games where the final margin of victory was 8+ points.

 


Not true? I said most were when they were losing. You stats show he threw 62% of his TD when trailing by less than 17. Did he throw any when trailing by more than 17? Probably so that 62% goes even higher.

Problem is he doesn't throw any in the 1st quarter. Someone mentioned he has thrown I think 5 or 6 career TD's in the first quarter.

OP makes a great point. A lot has been made about all the help Bortles has in terms of receiving options, but just as important is having at least a respectable running game. I sure hope that with that Blake can take 2 steps forward after taking a step back so far this season.

Doesn't account for the fact that on far too many occasions he does not pass the eye test, ie the ball comes out of his hand funny, he clearly overthrows, throws behind, does not make a good decision. You can say with a good running game the decisions are easier yes but not to this degree different. On a few occasions the Jags won despite his play, from the top of my head I can't remember a game where he carried the team or kept the team in the game. He has to get better no statistic will deny that

Please. Allen Robinson is the best player on the team and it's not even close. Dude was scoring with Matt MGloin and Hackenberg at QB in Penn State. Hurns is a beast too. Oh, and Julius Thomas, anyone?

 

Quit acting like Bortles is all alone and irreplaceable. Dude has more weapons than most teams do. They manage with far less.

College is a completely different animal than the NFL. If it wasn't JaMarcus Russell and Ryan Leaf would still be around.

Yet, you was quick to mention that Allen Robinson was scoring touchdowns with Matt McGoins and Christian hackenberg as his quarterbacks in college. My point is you can't have it both ways even if you hate Blake as a QB for this Franchise.

You're comparing 2 different positions. It's much harder to play QB in today's NFL and harder to evaluate from college. Allen Robinson has a 42 inch vert and that hasn't changed. He's always been a guy that can go up and get it. He's been going up and getting the ball since before the iconic Michigan catch. That's easier to project in the NFL. Easily a solid pick for Caldwell barring injury which is why we traded up for him. Blake said himself just throw ARob a jump ball and the worst you can do is throw it over his head. The fact that ARob has turned into the monster that he has is a testament to his hard work and the great Jerry Sullivan.

 

The speed of the NFL can overwhelm a QB. It's done so many, many more times than a WR. The ball itself is different than in college. Then you got reading defenses, protection schemes, blitz disguising, the bright lights, etc. I'm not calling Bortles a bust. I'm saying he is not the "be all" of this offense. At least not right now.

I truly agree with you and I wish bortles wasn't struggling right now because I truly want people to appreciate his great talents.

If Robinson is this monster, why is he having a down season? His 11 YPC resembles his rookie season, not his monster pro bowl season.


I'm from the school of thought that your QB makes your WR. I seriously doubt the Allen bros would reach their level of play with Henne chucking the ball to them. Not saying Bortles is infallible but he's a major cog.
