If The Jags Have The First Pick And Take Clowney. How Mad Would You Be?

#21

Let's draft Clowney, after he doesn't do anything due to surgery after the end of college football. Good plan.

What if Caldwell sees a QB that will come available in the next draft who is just as good as Bridgewater, and he also notices that no Defensive End in that draft is as good as Clowney? Then, he takes Clowney #1 overall, rides Gabbert to another poop-tastic season, and gets a high quality DE and a high caliber Quarterback! Win win!

Or am I supposed to be mad because he didn't take Bridgewater?

Bridgewater or bust!

BAP, better yet... someone trades us the farm for either one.

I am totally not sold on Clowney as the #1/#2 pick. Yes he has the size and speed and combine hero stats. Yes he also has the sacks and game numbers to back things up. However, CBA you have to go QB.

Elite QB's are few and far between. It is like getting that superstar closer in NBA or elite ace in MLB. So you have to go and find it. Not sold on any QB's in this draft, but the obvious onces (Bridgewater, Boyd, & Hundley) seem the most likely to pan out. I still believe Murray can be a serviceable starter on a playoff team, not sure yet to win a title though. Thing is that those first 3 guys will go in the first 15 picks. (Murray will most likely go from early 2nd to middle 3rd, depending on how the LSU and Florida match ups go.)

Essentially they should only draft Clowney if their guy is there later, but I don't see that elite level QB falling later. (No I don't trust Manziel to pan out.)

You can find gem pass rushers later in the draft, even more often than QB's. Superstar pass rusher almost never "lead" their team to the playoffs. And after that, you still need that great-to-elite QB to win once there (Tampa Bay/Baltimore-1st Champ as notable exceptions). To put it this way, there are something like 45-50 decent starting pash rushers (DE/DT/LB) in the NFL. There are less than half of that in terms of QB's. Even if you grade Clowney as equal to Bridgewater, the QB position is just so much more important.

This. I don't think Bridgewater is the only QB in this class that is going to lead his team to the playoffs. Hopefully Caldwell can judge the handful of QBs in this draft.

I wouldn't be mad at all. I'd do a backflip if we took Clowney.

I have a good feeling about Mariotta. He reminds me of a more polished but slightly less athletic Kaepernick. If we got Clowney and somehow got Mariotta I would be a happy camper. That combo is the only one I would like if we somehow passed on Bridgewater.

I really feel like Mariota is more of an athlete than Kaepernick is, but that's just my opinion. I like Mariota's upside and all, but I would really like for him to have another full year of college ball under his belt before he moves on.

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!

If the Jags are picking high enough to take Clowney then no way does Caldwell stick with Gabbert another year - unless Khan doesn't mind averaging about 25,000 per game.

Yes, you are supposed to be mad that Caldwell doesn't take Bridgewater. The Board Seers have guaranteed us he's a Hall of Fame QB.

If the Jaguars have the first pick by default instead of by trade, I will be very mad. I always want them to win no matter how bad they are.  We don't have to draft Clowney or Bridgewater at #1 overall. One of them will drop and barring a miracle, we probably will still pick in the top five - bad enough to get the other one.

If Clowney is still there, we are likely trading down.

It does not surprise me that you listen to Colin Cowherd and deem him a credible source.

Like anything else, I don't believe that EVERYTHING he says is correct, but I also won't deny that he does have some really good points sometimes, and that was one of them.

This point will be moot when Bridgewater loses to two scrubs and ends up a mid first.

I do like Clowney, he is going to be an excellent pro. We need a QB though and I do believe that is what we will go after with our 1st pick. It's a QB league.
