Centers

I think with the apparent inevitable retirement of Brad Meester..us drafting a center seems incredible likely...what center would you like to draft?

I will admit I am awful at eviatong offensive lineman. But I was thinking we have 2 4th round picks (thank you lions), and I have great reports about Gabe Ikard of Oklahoma..

What are your thoughts and if you have any better prospects, please share Big Grin

I think if we draft a QB to start it will pretty much force our hand in finding a veteran Center next year. Not to say, we won't draft a developmental prospect somewhere along the line, but a rookie QB and a rookie Center seem like an unlikely starting combo.

I agree we will get an experienced center but I also think we'll draft one for the long term.

We got extra fourth and fifth round picks from the Ravens. What Lions trade are you talking about? All of the former Jaguars currently in Detroit went there as free agents.

So far this forum has been dominated with quarterback discussions, so it is good to finally see someone start a thread about offensive linemen. Even if Brad Meester plays another season, I would not be opposed to drafting a center in 2014. Fans have been begging for a replacement since the day he snapped the ball to his own butt while David Garrard was in the shotgun. However, the entire line needs to be upgraded, including a backup left tackle. I think it would be smart for David Caldwell to draft five offensive linemen, just like this year he drafted five defensive backs, after he picks what we need the most, a quarterback.

How many times do we have to tell you? We got a 5th rounder when we traded Mike Thomas to Detroit. That gives the Jags a total of three 5th rounders this year.

The center from Arkansas seems to be everybody's favorite center in the NCAA.

According to the FA threads on the main board if we don't get Alex Mack in free agency then our season is going to be gloom and doom from the start.

The OP said we got a fourth round pick from Detroit, not a fifth rounder. That is what confused me because I knew we did not get that for Mike Thomas - who, IIRC, is not a Lion anymore.

So we have one each in the first three rounds, two in the fourth, three in the fifth, and one each in the sixth and seventh rounds, not counting compensatory picks?

Swanson's pretty ideal for our zone-blocking scheme. He might go late-2nd/early-3rd, though.

We had 2 chances at Barrett Jones last year. That really hurt to see St Louis pick him.

We had more immediate needs on defense. Center was not a priority.

If there is a center as good as Barrett Jones in the next draft, you will be happy with that pick.

True but Jones was a hybrid who could play center, guard and tackle. Incredibly intelligent kid also.

Its a hard thing to project right now. We were told before the season that the team would be a zone-blocking team, then a quarter of the way in they mixed in more gap concepts, and Bradley has since said the team will run both.

So what kind of Center does he want? Did they mix more gap concepts in solely because the current personnel couldn't run the zone very well? Or do they truly want a 50/50 mix? I think before we know that, it's very hard to say who we might look at.
