So I have a 2008 dodge ram, quad cab with 139k miles on it. 4.7 V8.


So I'm riding down the interstate today...cruising around 65 mph and boom, my engine just shut off.


I quickly looked down at my gauges and it looked to be running hot.


I pulled over on the side of the interstate and popped the hood and oil was all over the side of the engine block.


I recently had the oil changed at jiffy lube and watched them put the oil in and change the filter. Making sure it was tightened properly, etc.


So I called a tow truck. And will have to look at it tomorrow during the daytime. (Was dark when I broke down).


Any mechanics out there that can offer any advice. Thinking I blew the engine for some odd reason.


Sucks man. A new engine is like 2 grand and that's a used one.

I'm not a mechanic, but that sounds just like when my head gasket blew..

80% of what I talk about is nonesense.. the other 25% is made up statistics...


 

Besides a hole in the block or oil pan, oil only has a couple of exit points that would create such a sudden massive leak. A failed oil filter or, more likely, a failed oil sending unit. Unless you detected leaking coolant as well, the overheating condition would be caused by an oil starved engine. Hopefully Eric chimes in. He's a professional mechanic.

Check for water in the oil to..... if it looks like a brown sludge, you probably blew a head gasket. Worse case scenario, you cracked the head or the block.

Yup. And sometimes it looks like white milky substance, which would indicate a coolant leak into the block.

Two things that I've learned in life.

 

1.  Don't buy a Chrysler product.

 

2.  Don't get your oil changed at Jiffy Lube.

Like others have said, if you have any oil left in the pan, you can check for water (milky white) in it, which indicates head gasket.


That wouldn't be cheap per se, but you wouldn't need to replace the whole engine.


If you see any metal shaving in the oil, that's another level of problem. That would be new engine territory.


If you're mechanical you could do a leak down test, I think the kits are like $50.

Yup.  I'm amazed he got this far beyond 100k without the motor committing suicide.  Especially if Jiffy Lube is keeping those fluids changed.
