Trade up for Teddy: Good or bad idea?
|
The only time I like trading up is when we have to leapfrog a team that likes the same player. This worked perfectly in 2012, when the Buccaneers were happy with only a fourth round pick to move down two spots (from 5 to 7). The Derek Cox trade did not work out so well because the next year, nobody wanted to give us a second rounder and we missed out on a player we wanted, so I am against trading future second round draft picks. But what if the Texans do not pick Teddy Bridgewater, the Rams don't want a quarterback, and the #3 team needs a quarterback as much as we do? That would be the perfect time to trade up to #2, especially if we are #4. Of course, it is all hypothetical, and may be unlikely, but we all know about upsets in the draft and it is not clear how the Texans want to fix their quarterback problem.

Id be able to read your post, but since I have you on ignore, it looks like a blank page to me..
If Caldwell thinks Bridgewater is the best QB in the draft, then I hope he goes for it.
I was wrong about Trent Baalke.
Simple answer: no.
I think teams do and only should bet the house, trade-up, and give away valuable later round picks, for the once-in-a-lifetime prospects than you know only come around ever so often. As Washington did with RG3(which is still yet to be seen if that was right or not). But like say for example that Jaguars could somehow make a trade this year to ensure they were the first pick next year, knowing they would nab the very rare talent that is Jameis Winston. Now that might make sense. But I don't think many teams will be overreaching for Teddy. If he's there, they'll certainly get him, but trading-up probably not. And that's because Teddy's a good qb, 2nd best on my big board, and with the right assembled cast around him a possible franchise guy in the NFL for a long time. But if the Jaguars didn't trade up for the likes of Cam Newton, Andrew Luck, or RG3 any other these previous draft-years, I don't see why we'd trade up now for a guy like Teddy, who most if not all would agree is good, but not on the level of those 3 when they came out. I have a strange feeling though that if Texans don't absolutely fall in love with Bridgewater, that he might still be on the board by the time it gets around to us.
I want 3 players. Clowney, Bridgewater, Manziel. Jaguars have the number 3 pick. Just give me one of those 3 at 3, and I'm happy.

I hate the RG3 trade. Three first round draft picks to move up only four spots? Ridiculous. He could have still been available at #6.
Not trading up for Cam Newton was smart. We had the #16 pick and would have had to give up too much to talk the Panthers into trading down. The next year, there was no chance the Colts would be interested in any trade down offers because they knew they wanted Andrew Luck. Our situation will be different in the 2014 draft and so is the geneal manager. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! Quote:I hate the RG3 trade. The Redskins outbid the Browns for the 2nd overall pick by adding an additional 2nd round. Otherwise, the Rams would have traded that pick to the Browns. The Browns traded up 1 spot (from #4 to #3) to take Trent Richardson (lol) and then traded up into the first round to take 29 year old Weeden at late #20-ish. What on Earth made you believe RG3 was going to be available at pick #6? And beside, people keep bashing the Redskins for the trade without actually understanding why they currently struggle this year. Obviously his recovering from the knee injury was a huge factor for his struggling because he didn't have an off-season to work on hiscraft, and missing out on two first round picks in that trade is also a factor. However, the biggest blow was when Roger Goodell handed them that combined $30+ million cap penalty for the year 2012 and 2013 -- and that penalty announcement was right after they made the RG3 trade official with the Rams before the draft. I am confident and willing to bet that when it's all said and done, the Redskins will be the winner of that trade.
Last time we traded up for a QB it ended badly.
Let's just stick with position or trade down, this team has too many holes to be throwing away picks.
All depends on the price. I'd give up a day 2 pick this year or our 1st rounder next year, but not a RG3 style haul.
depends from where
if we get pick 4 one of bortles bridgewater clwoney and barr will be there all are elite prospects at postions of need so no if not i would trade down and let the qb and let teams take carr, manziel evans and try and get one out of khalil mack and bradley roby at 9 or 10 depending on who fell to us both are top players and i think roby has a chance of becoming an elite cornor, a backfield of roby gratz and cyprien could develop into one of the best backfields in the nfl as for mack, the guy is someone i would be happy taking earlier but i think we can get him lower especially with the amount of qb needy teams We show less advertisements to registered users. Sorry UKJag but Roby has easily been one of the most disappointing players this year. He might not even be a top 10 CB in this draft anymore and will probably be a 3rd rounder...although he should really just stay in school now.

He got kicked around against Wisconsin but has had a solid season but the kid has good size and strength and great speed A good bowl game and a solid test at the combine and he will be back up around the top 15 Quote:All depends on the price. Assuming the draft order looks like: Texans Rams Jags If the Texans passed on Teddy, I would give the Rams a 2nd just to make sure I don't get jumped by another team trading up. Not sure about giving up future first rounders, but if it gets us the most important piece of the puzzle that is hard to pass up.
No we take BAP then be bad enough to get Winston next year.
This is a joke by the way but I still wouldn't trade up for Bridgewater.

Quote:Last time we traded up for a QB it ended badly. So.. in other words be scared of trading up because it didn't work one time? Really? We don't have Gene Smith as our GM anymore. If Caldwell believes in Teddy, and wants to trade up for him, I hope he can and does.

No.
We suck at trading up. Name me a player in the past 10 years where it worked for us. The Cox trade was OK, because it wasn't too expensive. MB crush Blackmon is talented enough, but can't stay on the field. Harvey/Groves.. well, we all know how that worked out for us. I'd sooner trade down than up. I have a feeling TB won't go first overall. If were picking 2 he'll be there. If were picking 3 I think he'll still be there barring some other team leapfroging us.

Quote:No. You didn't hear? We got a new General Manager last year. He's never traded up before, so we don't know if he sucks at trading up or not.
