I just don't want to bring a cat home only to see him/her get totally stressed out because of all that holiday stuff. My sister, her boyfriend, and his 12-year old daughter are coming from Mississippi. When that happens I can't sleep with the cat.

My dogs are big. Your dogs are giant. I love mastiffs. So much drool!

 

The Italian mastiffs are definitely the smarter, more athletic mastiffs. They aren't as big as some of the others, but they typically live longer. Only problem I have with her is that she's extremely protective. She'll love you to death if she ever bothered to trust you enough to get inside the house.

 

I'm probably going to get a lab next though.

My mom quickly ruled out kittens and will not budge on her position. That is OK because a big 10-year old cat often hangs out in my yard and I want them to tolerate each other.

Sucks about losing him. I lost my last cat 11 months ago.

For a while I ordered 48 5.5 ounce cans every 2 months on that website. Eventually I could not even pay with that savings (15 percent each month) anymore and Mom started getting it from the vet.

 

Thank God regular cat food is much cheaper than prescription diets!

I've got a 9 year old yellow lab mix. He's quite possibly the friendliest and happiest dog I've ever met. However that also extends to strangers so he's not much for a guard dog.

Every dog I've ever had has been that way, except one. When I was a kid, we had an Akita mix named Hobie. He was super sweet with us and and other family members, but he hated strangers. He was actually a great guard dog. The two dogs I had previous to the ones I have now, were big babies. I had a Boxer named Shawnee and a Rhodesian named Cheyenne. The two sweetest, calmest dogs ever. They loved everyone. The two I have now are wild, but very friendly. If someone tries to break into the house, I'm relying on their barks to scare them away. They're big dogs and their barks can be quite intimidating to people who don't know them. If that doesn't work, I have guns as backup protection against intruders. LOL.

A beaver and a groundhog? Wow! They can be pretty vicious when cornered. When I was a kid, we had a Cocker Spaniel named Jock. He cornered a groundhog in the back yard and it lunged for him and took a chunk out of his neck. We had to rush him to the vet, but he was o.k. Your two must be very territorial. Do they get along with one another?

I think I've heard that about Akita's. It's not necessarily a bad thing either.


I hope mine would at least bark at an intruder but I'm not sure he would ha. He just loves people. He was a rescue dog and he really appreciates attention.


He got into a stranger's car once while I wasn't home. The crazy lady actually took him. It's a long story but thankfully I got him back. Lucky for that lady that it was my mom she dealt with (I was at work) and not me. My mom was far nicer than I would have been to the lady.

Odds are the cat won't care if you're gone for a few hours.

 

Odds are it could be a stressful time for the cat and he/she will need me at night, especially just two weeks after settling into a new home. But the only thing that can keep me out of a shelter this month is Mom's unwillingness to take me there (which would be because of holiday stuff).

My first cat also lived 12 years. She liked to jump on my lap during football games. Her life was very good until the end.
