1. Derrick Harvey - Gave up a lot to get him. 8.0 career NFL sacks in less than 50 starts I believe. Last rookie to sign his deal too in 2008. 

 

2. Blaine Gabbert - Gave up a 2nd round pick to move up to get him. Never looked like an NFL caliber QB in the pocket. Played like a coward. 

 

3. Justin Blackmon - Teased us with potential more than Reggie and Matt ever did but couldn't overcome his demons off the field. 

 

4. Reggie Williams - One good year in the red zone but never cracked more than 60 catches or 650 yards in a single season. He was another pot head. 

 

5. Matt Jones - Lazy and got by with just pure athletic ability. Couldn't overcome his demons but could have been a solid player for years to come. 

 

6. Blake Bortles - Not looking good future wise. Too many turnovers. Heavy regression this season. May never recover. 

 

7. Luke Joeckel - 2013 had a weak first round class but he's now finished up on IR twice in his four years here in Jacksonville. Never lived up to his status. 

 

8. R.J Soward - Another kid with the off the field demons he couldn't overcome. Doesn't sting as bad Matt, Reggie and Justin though now in our overall history. 

 

9. Tyson Alualu - Good man on and off the field. Not really his fault he was over drafted by a whole round. But it hurts to see him with only 17.5 career sacks. Especially when we passed on Jason Pierre-Paul who has 50.0 career sacks and also Earl Thomas who has been a pro-bowl caliber FS for years now. 

 

10. Byron Leftwich - As ugly as his mechanics and footwork were from the pocket. He's the only first round QB to ever be drafted by this franchise and leave Jacksonville with a winning record (24 - 20) during his tenure here in Jacksonville. Bortles and Gabbert combine for (15 - 53) during their tenures here. 

Excellent list. The only changes I would make are:

 

Gabbert and Harvey switch places. Gabbert teased us with his excellent skillset for a q.b. Who would have known he would lack all the intangibles like courage in the pocket and leadership.

 

Alualu and Leftwich should be replaced with the 2 worst 2nd round picks in Jaguars' history- Cordell Taylor and Andre Branch.

 

Bortles will move up to the top 3 if he doesn't improve next year.

Derrick Harvey for the Fortune we gave up and the complete lack of talent. Reggie Williams was way over drafted considering his talent level too.

In one way I'm glad Gabbert was as bad as he was. If he turned out only slightly below average we could have been stuck with Gene for longer. Although in that alternate universe we probably don't have Bradley as our coach either.

Even if this thread was created in the past, there is absolutely nothing wrong with recreating it, since the list of busts grows annually anyway.

 

Caldwell's ENTIRE first draft. Not a single draft pick will be on the roster in 2017.

Wow I am shocked that Alualu had 17.5 career sacks. Maybe its not fair to list him as a really bad bust anymore, he just doesn't fit in with Harvey. Still a bust tho.

 

 

I agree he's not a really bad bust which is why I have him listed down at #18 alongside Bryce Paup who was also not a really bad bust.

Blackmon's talent was undeniable. I wonder if a better coaching staff could have kept him in line. As is, he's near the top of my list.


 

Some of this has to come down to coaching. For example, Drayton Florence was a total bust here, but played well on other teams both before and after he was a Jag. And Julius Thomas is not being used correctly.


 

If we're not just including players, I'd put Gus Bradley as the worst bust by far, even ahead of Gene Smith. No single player has held the Jags back for four straight years.

Agreed, Blackmon wasn't a bust in the classic sense, just can't be clean to be on the field due to his issues with sobriety (or lack thereof) his problems were well known before the draft and we still took him high to spite that; when he was on the field he balled out... kid had some of the best hands and body control I've ever seen. during that 4 game stretch before the final suspension he led the league in every major receiving category IIRC. 

 

It's not like he was RJ Soward who had the substance issues AND didn't perform on the field... Soward is still the top bust IMO, although Derrick Harvey has a strong case for that honor

I wish you people would stop busting on Alualu. As stated, it's not his fault that he was overdrafted, but he's been more than a serviceable player. His position is not one that garners a lot of sacks, so quit throwing that up as well. This has been stated by people that know a lt more about football than you wannabe GM's and scouts. Enough already.... Cut the guy some slack.
