He runs a 4-3 defense which generally would fit our personnel on that side of the ball.  He would use conventional DEs which should eliminate completely useless guys like Tyson Alualu.

Without commenting on the overall viability of Bortles for the moment, we have some decent talent on the offensive side of the ball.  If we ever got a QB who had it all together, whether that be Bortles or someone else, we have three good WRs in AR, Lee, and Hurns.  We've got two decent RBs.  Right now, we need to build the OL, minimally needing a RT and a LG, with an argument to be made for a stud LT.

 

My point is that if we had a better coached team, we'd play with more leads.  If we played with more leads, our guys on defense like Jack, Telvin Smith, Ngakoue and Fowler become better players playing in a more conventional 4-3.

    Yet,   from the standpoint of the Jaguars as a young team that hasn't experienced much winning in recent seasons and at times seems to lack discipline and attention to detail,  is Mike Smith a good fit in that respect?    I have some doubts,  though I certainly have respect for Mike Smith as a person and recognize the winning and playoff seasons he's had with the Atlanta Falcons.

Well, I know I'm asking a lot, but go back to Smith's days as Def coord here.

I don't.  Now granted a coach on the team who knew the defensive teachings and assignments may recoil at what I just typed, but from the outside looking in, there didn't seem to be many problems with gap control, blown assignments, stupid penalties on that side of the ball when he was there. 

 

As coach of the Falcons, he had to do something right for them to get  to the playoffs all those times under him.  I think if there were any sins he was guilty of is not building a dominant enough defense or dominant enough OL.  As I type this, I realize his LBs in Atlanta were not the athletes Jack and Smith are, and he didn't have the kind of CB we have in Ramsey.

While Mike Smith was HC of the Falcons the special teams finished in the top 10 5 years in a row. The defense was a top 10 scoring defense despite its flaws for 2 years also.

I agree with everything you said, except the part about having 2 decent RB's. Unless I fell into a coma and have just woke up years in the future, you must be wrong. The last time I checked, Ivory and Yeldon were our RB's. You can't possibly be referring to them.
