Tom Coughlin

Quote:I think Coughlin should coach and Dave be the GM. I dont like the idea of Coughlin and Caldwell doing the same thing. That could be disastrous. You might as well fire Dave Caldwell if you want Coughlin as the VP of Football Operations. Coughlin likes to be in charge, I just see that not working out well.

Im a big fan of bringing back Coughlin and I think what the fans and Dave Caldwell need is a winning culture and to compete. Coughlin will bring you that. We can debate if we are a talented team or not, but I see talent there. I think we had some bad coaching which played in hand with the lack of discipline and lack luster environment Bradley created.

My ideal situation is Coughlin comes back for 2 to 3 years, brings discipline and a culture of winning. We may not make the playoffs next year, I cant predict that, but I do see a quick turn around happening and I think Coughlin can train this team up and make the necessary tweaks to the roster that will make us better. After a few seasons, when hes ready to retire, he will have groomed a coordinator to replace him.

Fully agree, and great player on your thumbnail. TC not being coach but in the organization makes the appointed coach and GM's roles murkier. Hire him to be on the pitch with the lads or leave the legend in peace.

The more I think about it, this is a great opportunity for Tom! If he could somehow come back, turn this franchise around, and dare I say win another Super Bowl, he would have to be in the discussion for greatest coach of all time!

Quote:He was bad at managing the cap, but overall he was pretty darn good at selecting players. I assume Idzik will be sticking around to manage the cap and obviously Dave is still around. Tom would essentially be here to have input on all facets of the team.

I thought Michael Huyghue was the cap guy back then, so I don't get people's issue with TC at GM.

De Bruyne is special, though Pep and his philosophy hasn't really translated to great results yet, though we did really have nice victory against Arsenal last weekend. That really helped us and maybe that will get the team back in better form, we have a brutal 6 matches coming up.

I think you might as well fire Caldwell if you want Coughlin sticking his nose in every decision that will be made on the team.

Indeed Huyghue made a mess of their cap situation with his belief in paying players top dollar, however, that was never the issue with TC as GM. The issue with TC at GM was that after his first couple drafts, he absolutely stunk at drafting players. He had a few draft classes that were nearly complete busts, and it's those bad drafts that depleted their roster of talent.

Hate to say it, but with his age, this could be better. He on dat Big Tuna type status; well he would be.

I would think that the main thing u miss is that discliplinarian with a young undisciplined team. Unless u still hire that type of coach.

I forgot about this.

People forget,

Coughlin wanted to draft Lawrence Phillips before Wayne Weaver told him not to.

He wanted to trade 2 first round picks for the 5th pick in the draft, because he wanted to draft Curtis Enis.  If Chicago had taken that trade, we wouldn't have had Fred Taylor and Donovan Darius.

He drafted Harry Deligianis in the fourth round without knowing anything about him, because there was a run on players at that position and he panicked.   Deligianis was a disaster and got cut in his first season.

He also drafted RJ Soward with a first round pick.     Remember him?   He had such a bad substance abuse problem, TC had to send a limo every day to pick him up and deliver him at practice.

We drafted Ryan Christopherson as a RB, and the very next pick, the Broncos drafted Terrell Davis!

And last but not least, don't forget, when the Jaguars were born, and TC was coach and GM, the NFL was giving expansion teams two picks per round in the draft.   That made it pretty easy to draft a team.

Coughlin is a great coach, but he's not a great GM.   That's why the Giants didn't want him as GM.

If Coughlin is coming on in the VP role, then I would assume that hire would come pretty quickly, no? Wouldn't they want him on staff before the coaching search really gets going?

There's no reason for Coughlin to be here if he's not the coach.

TC is a winner. I want winners in the building. It would be a great start.

Like I said in a couple other threads and many have stated here. Coughlin as HC? Hell yeah. Front office guy? Hell no. He is not a proven talent evaluator in less you want to concede he proved he was not very good at it. The man can definitely coach though.

Well, ideally he'd be the team's offensive coordinator, but would he accept not being the HC?

No HC candidate worth his salt is going to come here to be stuck under the thumb of the soup Nazi while also being stuck under the thumb of a proven-to-be-inept GM who only has 1 year left on his deal to begin with.

It's gonna be a clown show no matter what they do. That's what Khan and Co bargained for when they decided they were going to force old stink on a new regime via the Crap de la Caldwell.

Bring Tom on. It doesn't matter. Caldwell is just gonna get him canned too.

#56

I'm not close to saying Caldwell is proven to be inept, however he does need to do a better job picking the next HC.

I look at Caldwell and see tens of millions of dollars wasted on blown free agents, 4 consecutive top 5 picks, 75 percent of which have looked like busts for the most part. No GM ever selected in the top 5 five years running, yet here we are, led by everybody's damn golden boy.

Shack Harris was a better GM than Caldwell. Not by much, but he was better.

I do kind of miss Shack. Most of his picks were total busts with no business playing in the league, but every now and then, and especially in the 2nd round, he'd hit a home run drafting pro bowl, or borderline pro bowl, players. That said, I'd argue that Caldwell has done a much better job in free agency wasting even more money on players like Huge "Mistake" Douglas.

Pro football weekly say that Coughlin is the front runner for the Bills job. Its either agent trickery or its a HC he wants.
