Because making a tackle is a "flashy" play?

 

[BAD WORD REMOVED] any team with an offense that poor could have a league leading tackler.

But you can't dismiss the league leader in takles, who happened to be a rookie, because he had no flashy plays... His job is to make tackles, he was the best in the league that year, he was a rookie, the award made sense.


Ramsey's job is to defend passes, either by break up, interception or forcing the opponent to choose an option that he is not defending. Ramsey has done a little bit of all of those things, but not enough of any of them to be considered one of the best at his position.


Bosa's job is to apply pressure to the QB, in the form of hurries knock downs and sacks. Considering he is top 15 in the league in sacks, I'd say he is doing his job well. He will more than likely win the award, deservedly so.

ROTY is stat and highlight reel driven. If Ramsey had some ints earlier in the year he would be getting a lot more attention now. It has nothing to do with him being a Jag.

Bosa plays for a bad team. Ramsey plays for a bad team. Jaguars have rapidly improved from last season defensively and Ramsey will get much credit for being the best DB in a good defensive back group.


Jalen also matches up against the best receiver every snap. What does Bosas snap count look like and is he lining up to exploit matchups? I think Ramsey has done enough and will win the voters confidence as he plays a more difficult position for a rookie.

Bosa has been doing it since he stepped on the field. Ramsey just in the last couple of weeks.

 

Could Ramsey end up being the better player? Yeah, but Bosa has made more plays this season.

 

 

Ramsey has been playing well all year barring a few early plays where when the rookie was going through some schooling. It's part of the reason out pass defense numbers are so low despite a relatively weak pass rush. Sure he's done a phenomenal job the past couple weeks, but we were calling for him to be DROY as early as October. The biggest difference in the past couple weeks is that the media is finally noticing.


 

Bosa has the edge over Yannick, but they're not that far apart. He'll probably get the vote because fans love sacks, but Ramsey is having an even greater impact on the field.

When it comes to CBs, tackles are a rather useless stat. Deion Sanders was probably the GOAT at CB, and yet he averaged something like 2 tackles a game. A high tackle count for a CB is often an idication that the player is heavily targeted.

Ramsey will get it, hes a rookie shut down CB, that doesnt happen often, now that he has the picks, that will put him over the top, this isnt the probowl, they dont vote on this award until after the year

Speaking of, when is the award announced?

 

 Last season,  the NFL awards were announced the night before the Super Bowl.   I"m assuming this will be the case again this season.

Bosa has 9.5 sacks, has the most total pressures since Von Miller's rookie season (with one game left and after missing the first month), and is a monster against the run. He's been the best rookie DE of our generation. 

 

Ramsey has been great the last month, but Bosa had an insurmountable lead. 

 

If Bosa were to be upset it would be by Deion Jones, as that article above said. Jones has only 4 fewer passes defensed than Ramsey, but one more interception and one more defensive TD as a linebacker. Oh yeah and the 70 more tackles thing.

And if we are going to somewhat fairly give Ramsey a pass on his below average completion % against and passer rating against because the pass rush is making him hold up too long, then we should probably give some credit to Bosa for helping force some of those league leading interceptions that Casey Hayward has gotten.

Joey Bosa didn't have a sack when he was on National TV against the Broncos.   However,  he did have an impact on that game,  which the Chargers won with a strong Defensive performance.   Being that both the Chargers and Jaguars haven't had much National TV exposure this season,   even that one October game could be the difference in the outcome of who wins the award.   Especially,  when factoring in Bosa's overall stats.

 

Regardless,  the Jaguars have a key building block moving forward in Jalen Ramsey.   His play is probably the best Jaguars story of the team's season.   That much more considering the knee injury that raised major concerns back in the off-season.

Ramsey would win DROY if he had the performance and stats over the first 13 games that he has had in the first 2.  However, he played well, but not DROY-level in the first 13 games.
