I just saw something on Pro Football Talk about Drew Brees expecting Sean Payton to be back with the Saints again in 2017 after new rumors of him being traded away.  This time the rumors are of Payton being traded to the Rams.

 

In all honesty, of all the names I've heard that could possibly be available (technically not available) his name is the most intriguing to me.  We have a defense that could do well with Todd Wash in place while Sean Payton can focus on making our offense better.

 

The question is, what do you give up to get him?  In the past its been 2 first round picks.  Are you willing to do that for a coach of his caliber? 

 

If the Rams do that, they are screwed for years to come.  They are an awful team with an awful quarterback, awful depth, just bad talent, and losing those picks is going to make them even worse.  Us on the other hand....

I would tend to disagree.  Say for the Bucs, they got a Super Bowl out of Gruden.  I would give up two first round picks for that any day.

He cant just snap his fingers and its fixed. Fixing an entire side of the ball while balancing contracts on the offense is pretty difficult and requires teams to hit on a lot draft picks and make precise FA moves which arent all his responsibilities since he isnt the GM.

Snapping his fingers would imply this has been a short-term issue, and that's not the case. Payton isn't the magic bullet that's going to turn this team around. Giving up draft picks to land him would be a waste. Especially since there are better options.

You're right. But he's not without fault for how bad the defense was year after year.

Hes definitely not without fault, any problem on a team is inherently a head coaches fault. But id rather not assume he brings nothing to the table as a coach because his mostly talentless mostly rob ryan coached defenses havent been good. His offenses are still incredibly effective and well schemed.

Just because we found an incompetent one the last go round doesn't mean we should give up valuable draft picks for a decent HC currently under contract with another team
