It's called counters and he's a back that can take advantage of them. Plenty of footage of him not having huge gaps to run through and still making huge gains on.

Have you seen the offensive line Dalvin has run behind the last two years? He has made something out of nothing for the last two years basically.

 

He gets an occasional hole, but more often than not Dalvin has had to do the majority of the work himself. Dalvin has done it against better defenses too.
