I thought he looked like a real good back, not a great back, but a real good one.   I'd like to have a great back in addition to a good back.   But I agree with everyone who says the offensive line has a lot more to do with success in the running game than the running back does.   Personally, I hope we make a major investment in the offensive line this offseason.  If we don't do that, there's no point in drafting a premium running back. 

This. I was (once upon a time long, long ago and far away) a running back and I can tell you for sure that the line has the lions share of responsibility for the success or failure of a running back. There are exceptions to this rule, but it is a general truism.

As Jags02 said, he could be a "Sproles-esque" player. Especially as he gets more experience. Not going to be a feature back, unless injury forces him to, but change of pace 10-15 touch guy is perfect.


Not sure how his hands are, but he'd be a perfect pass catching back role player.

Thats basically what I saw out of him.  Durability wise I think he wouldn't hold up the whole season as a feature back but he made some nice cuts yesterday and broke some tackles he hadn't before.  Even outran the Colts safety Green who is a 4.3 guy on his long run.  You could tell they tailored the offense for him though and it almost resulted in a pick six at one point.  He is a good little player I think he deserves about 10-15 snaps a game.  If we had a better Oline I'd roll with him till the wheels fell off.  

Agreed on durability issues.

Let Ivory wear them down and Grant burn them for the big play. I'd rather draft another RB, but we weren't really using Grant. We were running Ivory or Yeldon outside; they're entirely too slow to take advantage of it.

Ivory had a half dozen big runs this season to the outside, so while I wouldn't limit roles as strictly as you suggest, what you're saying makes sense given each player's traits. 

 

A couple of new faces on that line and a better run-game plan from the staff and this team should be able to get plenty of production from a healthy Ivory.

How the backs on the depth chart from there end up is anyone's guess at this point, but I doubt we see radical change there.  

 

Grant will get looks in camp for sure. He's under contract. Most any coach worth his salt will look for a way to utilize his speed if he performs well in camp.

He showed more field vision than I recall him demonstrating prior to that game. I thought he was severely lacking in vision prior to Sunday.

 

 And he showed a bit more grit by breaking a few tackles  --   something I don't recall ever seeing him do with the Jaguars.

 

Fluke?  Maybe.  He looked pretty good though. Definitely showed off the speed. 

Did y'all actually watch his preseason games of the past two years?  He broke tackles and showed grit by running guys over.  If Vince Wilfork didn't fall on his ankle last year we might have seen more last season.  More opportunity is all he's needed.

Was the long TD run "to the outside"?  Grant gets lots of looks in camp, impressed the players, but coaches made poor chooses.

I love him as our RB3 behind Dalvin Cook and Chris Ivory.

The biggest thing with him is can he run routes, catch, and pass block. The best offenses right now are the ones that can create clear mismatches with versatile RB's (or TE) who can do multiple things. We do not have enough of those players.

 

Ivory is okay to average at pass catching.

Yeldon seems to lack vision and decisiveness seeing the hole on zone runes.

Denard is just too inconsistent at everything, especially pass blocking.

 

In 17 games with the Jags, Grant has 6 catches off of 10 receptions. Unless that is a talent this coaching staff has woefully underused, he shouldn't be more than competing for a roster spot next year.

I've actually always noticed his outstanding vision and am wondering what you saw to think "severely lacking." It's one of the things I like best about him right after his raw speed, and it's also why he's so good on KRs.

I have heard that Freddy T is a huge fan of Grants mentioned it post game this week hopefully Freddy can work with him in the off season breaking down tape and tendencies of defensive fronts and whatever else Fred can teach him

Hmm... It might be a matter of consistency. It does seem like when he's not seeing a hole, he'll just run straight as hard and fast as he can. ...but, on the other hand, he's always had this knack for finding holes opening up and bursting through them. It's like he sees what's just about to happen and takes advantage before players can possibly change their direction. Finding holes might be the wrong term... it's more like he finds seems.
