If Caldwell is still the man that acquires talent, what does Coughlin do?


If Coughlin has final say with regards to free agency and who we draft, what's the purpose of Caldwell?

Just my guess, but it appears to me Coughlin's role will be more of Quality Control. He has a unique insight to football operations that most front office people lack. I think he will be a neutral 3rd party to tell Dave and Doug when they are screwing up and if need be he has the power to fix things himself or go directly to Khan. I think VPs almost always lean towards the FO, while I think Coughlin may be the first to really have his ear in the coaching rooms.

It's only a cluster because the anti-Caldwell people want to make this seem like Caldwell basically lost his job. And they're doing it with nothing but hearsay and weasel words to back them up. Same as it ever was.

I dont think people realize what this hire really means. Its already being reported Coughlin has final say.

I dont know what people are debating about or what there is to argue. This is now a fact. 10 am on Thursday is the introduction, get used to the name Tom Coughlin. Hes essentially the GM. 

What does this mean? He's essentially the GM. Either he is the GM or he isn't.

 

That's like saying something is a virtual certainty.

 

Dave was extended as the GM. Tom was brought in as the VP - and whatever Danny boy and O'hally say doesn't mean anything until we hear it straight from the horses mouth. 

 

Like someone else said earlier in this thread, Tom will be the extra pair of eyes but at the end of the day Dave will be the one calling the shots. Tom will be the one whispering into Caldwell's ear if he should go through or not.

We will find out more Thursday, I suspect Caldwell will be doing the drafting and FA acquisitions but he has to get all his moves approved by Coughlin.

Which still brings me to the point that why not just let Coughlin do it from scratch if he's going to have to approve things Anyway? Seems redundant

I highly doubt this will be the case, but if in fact it is, I will have to question the leadership of Khan for the first time (for me)… Either man up and fire Caldwell and let TC take over, if this is the case, or TC is basically going to be an advisor for the GM and coach.

And if it's the latter (coughin doesn't have any real power), then this hire is more of a publicity stunt to appease fans. Time will tell.

I don't think the problem is the lack of talent, because we have the talent to win.

 

I think it was the utter and complete, gross mismanagement from Gus and the coaching staff - and the pitiful culture and attitude that Gus had established. 

 

We had the talent to win the AFCS this year… It was just the perfect storm of bad penalties/ghost penalties, bad coaching decisions, and bad plays that got us to where we were this year.

I think the problem was more on the coaching side of things instead of the talent acquisition. 

 

TC needs to fix the coaching side of things, otherwise I believe his talents will be grossly misguided and mismanaged too...

Dave will do all the GM legwork...making calls, talking to coaches and scouts, scouting and TC will give the okays

It seems wrong because it is wrong.  Popcorn1216 is misinterpreting this.  Dave will still be the GM and do 99% of the GM stuff.  Doug will still be coach and do 99% of coach things.  Tom will just monitor things, give advice, and in ultra-rare cases over-ride a decision.  And be there for Shad when Shad needs an independent football judgement.

 

Let's say Jags go 9-7 next three years.  In 2017 we would be fairly pleased.  In 2018 and 2019 there would be questions raised as to why we can't become elite.  Is it coaching? Is it personnel?  Is it a combination?   That's when you need Tom Coughlin.
