Yeah you blame Blake, you cant expect any defense to keep the opposing offense out of the end zone every time they are put in compromising situations
I'm not saying our defense was terrible, they were actually better this last year than 2015, but I am just not buying into this 6th ranked defense. There are other factors that can play a role in yardage from scrimmage. Just as someone who watches a lot of football for a long long time, the Jags defense does not pass the eye test of a top 5-6 defense.
You will know a good defense by its fruits, those are the turnovers, big plays, and stops. Yeah BBINT put them in a terrible position all year but they did little to help themselves by forcing turnovers and not giving up tds. I think realistically, our defense is a top 15-20 defense. I am buying into our talents on that side of the ball though. A few more pieces and the right scheme will go a long way. It's never a good sign when key players on the defense are complaining that they are being used incorrectly.
Calling Deshawn Watson a future bust since 3/19/17. If I eat crow, I will keep this in here and proclaim JackCity a genius.

Quote:6th ranked defense, that's just spinning the numbers. I don't think many of us are buying that hype. As for defending Hackett, I certainly won't. 6th ranked defense is a fact. Look it up. Defenses are ranked by total yards given up, and if you don't like that, yards per play given up. 1 Houston 2 Arizona 3 Minnesota 4 Denver 5 Seattle 6 Jacksonville http://www.footballdb.com/stats/teamstat...up=D&cat=T Argue you want about what it means, but the fact is, we were the 6th ranked defense. Quote:Forget what we was ranked in total yardage.. Its about not letting teams score.. What was the scoring defense rank?? The jags let teams score all over them.. Only 3 games they didnt let a team score over 20.. The defense gave up costly scores... Y'all stop being fooled by numbers.. And use your eyes.. Didn't Blake fool y'all enough by looking at his past numbers??? The points given up stat is skewed by pick sixes, short fields given up because of bad special teams coverage, etc. A lot of stuff the defense had no hand in. I'd like to see how many times our offense went 3 and out and put the defense right back on the field.

The Defenses ranking is misleading....but it goes both ways.
Yes they ranked highly in yards allowed but at the same time gave up way too many points. Some of that was because of the offensive issues(turnovers,3 and outs, pick 6's) and also poor ST play(short fields). But as was pointed out they did give up too many big plays. But "that" IMO can be attributed to all the rookies and first year Jaguars on the Defensive side. Blown coverages and being out of position comes with experience...both in the NFL and our system in general, and maybe more importantly working together as an 11 man unit in particular. What did we have like 7 of the 11 were first year Jags? One more Camp together with only 1-2 changes in personnel and I have a feeling those communication/blown coverage issues will improve immensely. The Defense will also improve,obviously....if/when the pass rush becomes more consistent. Something else that should improve on its own with another preseason together and even moreso If we add a guy like Garrett/Allen.
There are a lot of factors mixed into the ranking. Wash was a factor (and a huge improvement over Babich, but that's like dividing by zero). The talent was a factor. The lack of offense was a factor because it meant that the opponents could go conservative in the fourth quarter.
So it's hard to separate out just how good Wash is. A big concern is that Wash is a Bradley disciple and the players would do better in a different scheme. Several of the defensive players made that comment. TC (?) said the Jags will run a different defensive scheme in 2017, so maybe that concern has been addressed. Hackett was running Olson's playbook after he took over, so maybe 2016 was not indicative of his ability. The regression of Bortles was also a big factor. Hackett was a successful OC in Buffalo under Marrone. I am glad the Jags are interviewing Chip Kelly. This is a positive change from previous years when the new head coach would just bring in some mediocre also-ran. Maybe we're 'stuck' with Hackett and Wash, but at least the Jags have been trying to upgrade the coordinator positions. I don't buy these defensive rankings at all. The 1999 Rams were the #2 defense in the NFL, the next year they were 23rd and 31st in points given up. I put as much credibility into yards given up as I do Bortles 2015 passing numbers. Watch a few games and you can tell when a defense is elite and when it is not.

I'm unsure of both. However, I lean more towards Wash because we saw more consistency with them throughout the year. There's definitely more to improve on (the rush!! and turnovers), but I think he did a good job. Especially with how poorly the offense played and the situations they were put into.
Let's Get Em!!!! Go Jags!

To sum it up our defense was overrated.
