Why the hate for Wash? If you're wildly lauding every move made under Coughlin and Marrone, why skip their decision to retain him?


Neither coach (guess Tom ain't coach now, but you know what I mean) had any prior connection to him, and thus far it seems with Tom & Doug prior historical success has been a focus.


Yet they kept the guy that neither of them are tied to, and doesn't have the obvious championship pedigree as most of the newly hired staff does...how does that not logically translate into them being very impressed with how he talks schemes and accountability behind closed doors?


If you celebrate Toms perspective/judgement in bringing in these great coaches, why on earth would you assume he didn't do due diligence in looking at the cat he's putting IN CHARGE of his impressive hires.


To me, if Wash was able to convince Tom and Doug that he's the man on D going forward, that's a good thing.


Maybe I'm just an idiot, I dunno. I'm five shots deep so take it for what it's worth. But I feel like if we're gonna have so much confidence in every other hire, perhaps Wash deserves the same window considering the guys in charge had NO motivation to retain him unless he impressed them with his ideas/work ethic/process. If we're gonna trust their judgement, then trust it.

Everyone has different ways of dealing with things. Personally, I believe buying into everything the team does just makes people look gullible. If you don't like something, say it. If you turn out to be wrong, that's fine. I'd rather be wrong on something than to be gullible. After so many years of bad play, fans have a right to question the moves of this team.

I get what you're saying, but I also don't give a (bad word) about how I "look". I'm a 30 year old man, if I'm clinging to my image on some message board to find my identity I'm in bad shape.


I live in Virginia, I've been a die-hard Jags fan since I've followed football, '96 at age 9 when I realized I'd never have the body to play it going forward.


I endure constant abuse from casual fans of whatever team dumping on my Jags. I get that that is a different struggle from the beasts paying for season tickets. But it's very important to have out-of-market support. I'm fiercely loyal to our squad, I get stores that don't order Jags swag to order it in an attempt to do my part to show Jags have support. It's very hard in a region that is so over saturated with Skins, Panthers, Ravens, and Steelers gear.


I wish I could support more directly, but I'm not a rich man. I make less than 30k a year.


It feels better to be excited than not. Even if historically speaking I have little justification for expecting a return on my time/hope.


It's like sticking by a woman who's burned you. You're gonna disregard your better judgement cus you're trying to be a good man, and be loyal to who you love.

That's the difference. Some people need a lot of time and reassurance after getting burned. This team has burned the fans so much over the years, that I'm the type of person who needs proof that I'm not buying into another deception. As you say, some people will disregard their better judgement and stick by the team to be loyal, but to me and many others, that seems foreign. The team needs to earn back my trust. It doesn't mean I'm not still a fan, it just means I'm gonna question every move I disagree with until it's proven that we're back on track.

Thing is, there are more coaches retained than just Hackett and Wash. Ron Middleton and even Mike Mallory are still on the coaching roster. As is the S & C Coach. This is just to point out that there are changes, but they didn't clean house quite as thoroughly as I initially thought.

We are replacing the QB Coach (unless we get a new OC), RB coach, WR coach, TE coach, OL coach, DL coach, LB coach, DB's coach, AND Special teams coordinator.


I guess our defenitions of a lot of change are different. We are overhauling the defensive scheme (no doubt about it considering we fired everyone but Wash) and will have a brand new offensive playbook regardless if Hackett is retained or not. He used Olsen's playbook last year.

I completely understand and respect that. And in reality it's the only logical standpoint. But I'm a fool for women and football apparently, so I allow them to heap on the abuse,haha.

I'd do a lot of things for a pretty woman, but when I get burned, that's it. I have a couple friends who married bossy, abusive women and all they have gotten so far is a lifetime of misery. They complain about their wives constantly,but they feel "locked in." I refuse to be put into that position. It's not worth it. It never pays off. Once they know you'll sit back and take it, it'll only get worse.

From my experience you are correct. But I didn't mean to derail this thread into relationship advice, so I'll just say 'touche' and leave it at that.

Oh, there's a ton of change that has occurred and it's not unexpected. I just assumed that Marrone had cleaned house all the way down to Wash and Hackett and I was surprised that this was not the case.

Who was available? That would allow Tom to do his job? Most DC and OC want to hire own assistants.

It is easy to say to clean house. But you cant fix everything at once. And cant blame everything on the coach.

Does that mean all of Gus choices were trash? No. It just means some are more suitable at certain areas in Nfl.


Cause in the college game. The way gus coaches could turn any future team around.

Outsider Wash who is tied to the failed and fired former HC manages to impress Marrone and Coughlin enough to keep his job???

 

That's not a story of settling for mediocrity. That's a story of an upstart DC making inroads with a new regime that's very discriminating.

The question with Wash for me is how will the players respond?


Even just with things like the style of play. I don't think its a huge assumption to say that Bradley preferred the players to stick to there jobs instead of taking risks and jumping routes for interceptions. Wash coached them this year. Does he now come back and basically say "Oh yeah sorry the way I was told to coach the defense was in fact totally wrong and I don't actually think its a good way to do it all, let's do it this way now".


To me as a player that coach would lose credibility and I'd be second guessing things hes telling me to do after last year.
