Quote:Anyone try any of my suggestions? I didn't try it as such - but I do like the Chopin vodka you mentioned! Good stuff - and one of the few readily available potato vodkas. Judging from your musical interests - should I assume you are aware of the namesake Polish composer most known for his piano nocturnes and etudes? We show less advertisements to registered users. I am so not appreciative of good vodka. Like a lot of us, I overdid it once when I was a kid and was sick for 2 days so I shied away from it for a long time. Now I keep the requisite 1.75L bottle of Fleischmann's/Gordon's/Seagram's, whatever's on sale, around to mix with cranberry, tonic, etc.
I don't think I could tell the difference between them if you lined up 3-4 shots of different ones for me. Back to bourbon, I am nearing the bottom of the bottle of Basil Hayden's. I stopped pouring it over ice and now just drink it straight up and it is remarkably better that way. The bourbon season is about to give way to the silly Christmas drink and "Winter Warmer" beer season but then will happily descend into the scotch and winter lagers season.

Quote:I can't wait for their Snow Day beer to come out. Love that stuff! I don't think they are making this stuff any more. Now they have something called "Accumulation" and it's not like "Snow Day" at all! I'm going to have to console myself.
I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.
Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!
On a Budget tonight ($10) PBR it is~!

( it won the prize at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair BTW ) Quote:I am so not appreciative of good vodka. Glenrothes SelectReserve. It's time in american oak gives it some bourbon-ish qualities. Might be a good transitional whiskey between the two... We show less advertisements to registered users. Guess I'll have to suffer thru the leftover PBR's in my cooler tonight (Yeah, in a cooler, I like my beer at about 34 degrees)

I will look for the Glenrothes Select Reserve, the Basil Hayden was so good that I will trust your judgement again!
The scotch season opened last night- having the choice in the cabinet of the Glenlivet or the end of the Lagavulin, I decided to go heavy with the Lagavulin and finish it up. The peat smokiness in that is just fabulous. Two other favorites are Talisker and Bowmore. I want to try one that's made in Campbelltown I think it is, let me look it up...yes, Campbeltown and it's Springbank Distillery. I can't paste the link to Wiki-Campbeltown Single Malts- but it is located very south in the Highlands area on the peninsula of Kintyre, very near the Isle of Islay. Our local big box liquor store has a liquor manager uniquely named (I took his name out on second thought but his first name is the same as his last like Gregory Gregory) and he puts on invitation only tastings at the store once in a while which are can't miss events as you get to try a variety of different brands of whatever liquor is featured. He also keeps a number of open bottles in his office area and good customers are welcome to try what they might like. Very cool. I'll head over there tomorrow and hope to come back with one of the Springbank scotches and the Glenrothes plus a 12 pack of Wachusett (local brewery) Winter Lager, then settle in by the fire and watch the snow fall. On Pabst, two of our local Elks lodges have it on draft for $1/16 oz. Can't beat that. Free hot dogs on Monday nights and a couple of PBRs. The Elks is a great thing.

I get that it's cheap but...my snobbery senses need calibration now. Quick, someone start talking about gin or something.

Quote:I will look for the Glenrothes Select Reserve, the Basil Hayden was so good that I will trust your judgement again!Nice! I love the smoke in the Lagavulin as well. Don't go into the Glenrothes with your hopes too high. It's not going to be to scotch what Basil H is to Bourbon. It's almost like a bourbon/scotch illegitimate love-child. Hope you like it. I officially have a greater respect of the Elks now. Rache - Ha-Ha. I know it seems odd but sometimes you just want " a beer." And good ole PBR is always just that. (and he was referencing the discussion between Drifter and myself about Pabst) There's a really cool new spot in my hood that does craft cocktails and they have a couple of really cool old school English gins that aren't common in the states. I will probably have a drink there one night this week and get beck to you on those. My best bud said he had an amazing gin drink there last night.
How would you rate Johnnie Walker Black Label Scotch? I like the charcoal flavor it has. The JW Red has more of a fruity taste for me. And the Johnnie Walker Blue Label need to be chilled to enjoy (for me anyway)

It's in the context, Rachel:
- an expensive, fine scotch while sitting by the fire watching the snow fall in the New England woods - a couple of dollar PBRs while hanging at the Elks on Hot Dog Monday Then again, a PBR by the fire has been known to happen too. Drifter, I'm no expert but I do like JWB over JWR, I think it's considerably better. OTOH, I had some JW Blue at a friend's house and don't think it's worth the much higher price. NYC is a better judge than me though.
