I've realized recently how much information is out there just by putting your name into a search engine. I put my first name and former married last name in a search engine and found stuff I wrote to "letters to the editor" of a newspaper from 15 years ago.

I never use a personal picture of myself here or on Facebook as a profile or cover picture but I have in the past. There are a lot of things I wish was not out there, nothing bad, just stuff.

My husband doesn't pay any bills online, he writes checks and sends them in the mail. The only place we buy stuff online is Amazon and I've thought about using gift cards instead of credit cards but we've been doing it for several years now so there's almost no point in changing it up now.

For the most part, paying bills online is actually more secure (in most cases) than paying in person if using a debit/credit card or sending a check in the mail.  Contrary to popular belief, credit card information is stolen not by transactions online, but usually at a point-of-sale location.  That's not to say that someone can't hack Amazon's database and get the information, if they really want it they can get it.  The point is that it's more difficult and risky to do and pretty much pointless when there are easier targets that can yield good results.

One thing that credit card companies have been doing that helps prevent fraud is switching from the magnetic stripe on credit/debit cards and going to the "chip" type of card.  Without going into too much detail, the "chip" system uses encryption whereas the magnetic stripe system does not.

What many people don't realize is that if someone really wants to attack/track/hack someone else, it's actually not that difficult.  A malicious hacker doesn't usually target the "average person", they usually target someone more "high profile" or in a position that can get them to their ultimate target.  Much of it involves social engineering and many victims actually "invited" the hack to take place.

My point is that in today's world with social media and all, people need to really think about what they are doing.  Any little bit of information that they make public could be used... maybe not to attack them specifically, but in other ways.

Over the last few years there's been around two or three attempts to get into my email from Barbados or india.

Is that just random chance or does it mean that someone actually knows my details and are actively trying to hack it.

What do you mean by "get into your email"?

Most of the time if something is attacking your email, it's not necessarily to read it, it's probably some bot looking to use it for other purposes such as spam or a DDOS attack.

It would say that someone had unsuccessfully tried to log into my email from another country. Also my ps4 account was hacked but I managed to get that back.

I have around 10 (might be about 12 at this point) email addresses that all serve their own purpose

Most likely it wasn't a person trying to log into your email, it was probably a "bot".  A bot is basically a computer program that does things automatically for an attacker.  Trying to get into an email account is a sign that it probably was looking to use your account for spam activities.

One of the best things that you can do if it's provided is to use "two factor authentication".  I know that gmail and Facebook use this method.  Basically, once you set it up it requires two forms of authentication.  If you try to logon on with a web interface, after you give your username and password you must then type in a code that is sent to you by another means (usually a text message).

I can't use my Broncos Country forum account anymore because someone registered using my email address. I learned that when I was unable to sign in with the correct username and password multiple times. I requested a password reset. The email for that began with a different person's username. I decided not to fix the problem for only one week because that would have required creating another account.

My husband refuses to do any banking or paying bills online. We can access our Verizon wireless account online only because I set it up so I could see how we use our data plan. He was not happy about it but I told him tough crap. He did things his own way for the 18 years between the time he left home and the time we got married so he's stuck in his ways. Five years in and I'm slowly moving things along. I finally got him to agree to replace all the black curtains he had in the windows. Bachelor life is not easy to let go of apparently.

I worked with a girl about 10 years ago who was fresh out of college and all idealistic about life. She had everything on Facebook short of her SSN so friends and family could look her up and contact her and such. I told her she really shouldn't advertise her address. phone number, place of employment, college she just graduated from, etc., on any FB account but especially one that was open to the public. You could see everything about her on there. She didn't get it at first but a few others agreed with me after they saw it all and she finally deleted a lot of it and made it to where only friends could see it. She was a young blonde girl who was very pretty and very trusting and would/could have been a serious target for some nasty people.

Not before you had to live with the consequences of having your identity stolen.

I stood in the checkout line yesterday behind a guy who wrote a check. The urge to take a picture and post it on Reddit was almost overwhelming.
