Go to the last mock at draftcountdown they have him 2 overall to sf before the draft. A couple pre draft mocks had him going to us. If this was a mid round kid from Toledo who only had 2 sacks last year then if get where ur coming from. This kid was understood to be a first round talent that now we know has freakish athleticism.
If you're taking him for anything other than an interior pass rusher, his film doesn't scream outside or pass rusher to me like Barrett's film does. This guy just seems slow around the edge.

I wouldn't hate the pick but I don't know why it scares me so much. I feel it's so much easier to take Hooker, Lattimore or Adams and feel pretty comfortable saying they will be great at the next level. We really need to start hitting on these first round picks. Especially in the top 5.
Quote:While Thomas had an amazing combine I still feel some of y'all are severely overrating him in terms of draft position. Thomas is still a "tweener" and a man without a true position. Is he a DT? If so he's slightly undersized. Is he a DE? If so he doesn't have that "bend" you want to see around the edge. Aaron Donald had one of rhe best workouts ever as a lineman and still couldn't crack the top 5. The NFL is about as traditional as it comes and it doesn't look favorably on tweener types, especially in the top 5. Keep in mind here that we don't want to hinder Yannick's development as the starting RDE so we would need Solomon to take over Odrick's spot as the LDE. Ideally he'd make Alaalu expendable.

I look at Adams and I see a potential Pro Bowl SS who is sure to be one of the bigger playmakers on the defense. Also, since it's really the strongside end that is a need, are we sure the 286 lb Jonathan Allen isn't a better fit?

He mainly needs to set the edge against the run while taking on some of the leagues more massive right tackles, and then pass rushing is secondary.. Allen has that skill-set ...not saying that Solomon doesn't tho. It's just that the best strongside ends are not necessarily the best athletes. All of that said, I still think having a secondary with Adams playing alongside Gipson and Ramsey would do more for the defense than either potential strong-side end.

He might not have made such a big impression at the combine, but I still think having Fournette at RB improves our team more than having Thomas as a DE.
I also want to see Adams at the combine, because he could also be very impressive in the workouts. But I understand the love for Thomas. Quote:If Thomas is better than Yannick, then shouldn't we be playing Thomas in that spot? I suppose.. .but it would kind of suck if Yannick is not starting. He's easily a top 11 talent on the team.

For those who don't have the will or time to go through a lot of film of games just spend 15 minutes watching his game against NC here (15 well spent minutes): https://youtu.be/9_kfbI-2oHk
That probably remains his best game you can see a variety of things he can do in pretty much all situations. While he left 2-3 sacks there because Trubisky sidestepped him he was insanely disruptive throughout the game, he was in the backfield pretty much on every play, got double teamed, rushed from the inside, outside, made plays stopping the run. While he was good rushing from the outside his moves and rushing from the inside is elite stuff, he has an amazing first step and when left 1vs1 he was past the guard in no time. His last 2 plays at the end of the game show what a force he's throughout a game too. I've been on the Thomas train for a while but I'm starting to think he won't be there for us at 4. Let's hope some QBs will go in the top 3 and that Chicago goes secondary. Jon Heck is also a below average pass blocker who's strength is in run blocking. No bones about it he definitely dominated UNC but is his best better than Allens? Quote:Even then, if the RB becomes a stud for years then it's not a bad pick The problem with picking a RB is that they don't last very long. When you're building a team, in my opinion, you should start with the parts that last the longest, and that would not be RB. RB should be the last piece of the puzzle, because most of the time, they're only good for about 6 years. Offensive linemen can usually go for 10-12 years.

No bones about it he definitely dominated UNC but is his best better than Allens?I think they are on similar level, perhaps Allen has shown-done a bit more so far but he also had a better defense around him to account for. I think Thomas ceiling is higher though and on top of that he has no injury concerns. His performance at the combine confirmed we are talking about a fantastic athlete too. Both are very good players but as I said last week at this point Thomas got the 1A spot on my preference for our first round pick.
Every time I read this thread, I watch more Solomon Thomas on Youtube.
At this rate I'm going to end up a convert too! He does look very, very good - I'll give you that.

Quote:I've seen him beat tackles like a drum on the outside. If he were on this team I would keep him outside most of the time and only move him inside on special packages to get all three of Ngakoue, Fowler, and Thomas out at the same time.Exactly. Him inside next to Malik Jackson, who is a pretty good inside pass rusher in his own right, between Fowler and Ngakoue sounds really good. But given the depth of this class, I'd go back and get another edge rusher later on. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!
Personally, when I look at Thomas, I see his best spot being 3T. Maybe he does just as well at LDE, but his sample size at Stanford was at DT, and it was a really really really good sample at 3T.
We also don't know what "scheme" we'll be running. If we're mostly keeping our front, I don't know that spending the 4th pick on a "hold your point against the run" is the best bang for our buck. |
