Dante Fowler JR

Always best player, never positional need.
Fowler is what happens when you draft based on made up attributes like "bad intentions" as Dave said, instead of real stuff like freak athleticism paired with far superior tape.

I'm still confused on how we can already call Fowler a bust...

This thread isn't about whether Fowler is a bust, it's whether you would still take him at 3 over what we have seen from a multitude of other far superior guys (who were pretty obviously superior at the time no less).

Anyone who would still say yes might need a lobotomy.

Given the Jaguars' knack for horrible drafting for some years now, I've joked that some random fan could have drafted better simply by showing up to the war room drunk a minute before the draft begins, clutching a copy of College Football's Top 300. Cross off the names of the players picked before us and when it's our turn, pick the highest player not crossed off. Think of the team we would have. For example, Ben Roethlisberger instead of Reggie Williams. Aaron Rogers instead of Matt Jones.

Exactly my thoughts.  Sometimes pass rushers take some time and the guy was coming back off a significant injury.  JJ Watt had just 5.5 sacks his first year and that's with 16 starts!  Not saying Fowler will approach Watt's production that but let's see what he can do over the next couple of seasons.

I'm still confused on why he was a top 3 pick. Not a good athlete, and when he faced off against NFL talent like La'el Collins he was abused. Such a moronic draft pick. Even Khalil Mack didn't crack top 3 but Fowler did. What makes him a better prospect than someone like T.J Watt? Seriously.

Watt isnt a pure edge rusher so 5.5 is actually right on for where we wouldve expected him to be

Fowler is so lucky that our defense called so may plays where Abry or Malik or whoever would sacrifice themselves as crash down men on stunts so Dante could get the unblocked rush.

Imagine if he only got the .5 sacks he actually earned...the "oh but he got almost as many sacks as Mack and Beasley and Watt" claims would be so funny. As they already are to people who actually watched them all play as rookies and are able to remove raging homerism.

So did Cameron Wake and Robert Quinn had similar numbers his first season. Robert Mathis only had 3.5. Then theres the flip side where a guy like Mark Anderson had double digit sacks as a rookie for the Bears then kinda disappeared.

I'm holding off judgement of Fowler as NFL pass rusher until after the 2017 season.

I was happy with the pick. But I would have been ok with Cooper.

Hence why basing an argument on sacks is so dumb. A few fluky plays out of hundreds and hundreds can skew the perception of the entire season.

I wanted Leonard Williams. I'd still go with him. Fowler and scherff were the other two I was interested in though.
Coughlin when asked if winning will be a focus: "What the hell else is there? This is nice and dandy, but winning is what all this is about."

tbh we don't even really have a role for him right now as a starter and he was a 3rd overall pick

Ngakoue - Jones - Jackson - Campbell

Smith - Poz - Jack

My favorites were Williams and Cooper.

I was very vocal about the pick, but I'm not throwing in the towel yet.

Losing a season to injury, he hasn't had time to bust, yet.

Not as a starter maybe, but they won't have Campbell on the strong end for all of the nickel downs and they won't have Ngakoue on the weak side end for all the base downs  --  so that could easily be 20-30 situational snaps per game for Fowler depending on the opponent.

It will be interesting to see how they use him other than those situations.

The beauty of it is, Fowler will play as much as he earns now. If he beats out Yannick he'll have a big role, as he should.

I think he will be fine and we will all laugh about these threads in the future.

Go Jags!
*To stay up for atleast 2 years 3/6/17
2016 draft players I think will be good
  • On the Fournette train, will be best back of his class 3/6/17
  • Lattimore please,  Lockdowns on both sides would be nice
  • Engram at TE and the MJD clone Samaje Perine
