Which draft scenario helps us the most?

#1

One of the big talking points of this draft season on here seems to be about player value vs talent. Certain positions have certain value in the NFL, QBs of course being the most valuable with kickers/punters/long snappers being the least valuable.  A good punter will never be valued above an average QB, or at least they shouldn't be ( Gene Smiff). While its important to incorporate this value system into the draft, its also important to consider the talent level at each position in each individual draft.

In a deep running back class there may not be much difference talent wise between the #2 ranked running back and the #7 ranked running back, where as in lets say in a shallow tackle class, the difference between the #2 ranked tackle and the number #7 ranked tackle may be monumental. In order to construct the best draft possible, it would be wise to consider this and draft accordingly.

So my question is basically , considering player value, need and the talent levels of each position, whats the best draft we can assemble this year? Obviously people will have different opinions on different positions+ different values on our needs so I'll offer a few options at each spot. I'll keep it 4 rounds for each scenario to keep it simple. Because of where our 1st round pick (barring a trade down) there only a few scenarios

Needs: My picks would be ( In no particular order) Guard/tackle, tight end, Dline, running back , cornerback? safety?

Scenario 1 - (My personal choice)

Round 1- #4 = Dline - Thomas/Allen - Only two options at that spot in the first.

Round 2- #36= Guard/tackle - Moton/Dawkins/Elfein/Feeney/Garcia- Won't all make it to this spot, but good talent all round

Round 3- #68 = Running back - Perine/Mack/Hunt/McNichols/Gallman- Solid mixture here

Round 4- #110 = Tight end - Roberts/Butt/Leggett/Saubert/Sprinkle/Shaheen/Hikutini - Very deep class so might be the best value round for them

Scenario 2

Round 1 = Running back - Fournette/Mcaffrey/Mixon/Cook - Mixon/Cook highly unlikely there of course for obvious reasons

Round 2=  Tight end - Hodges/Everett/Engram

Round 3=  Guard/tackle - Siragusa/Pocic/Dorian Johnson/Conor Mcdermott - Decent selection of talent

Round 4= Dline- Avery Moss/Wormley/Deatrich Wise/Godchaux/Vanderdoes/Ogunjubi-  Hard to rank the dline guys, don't know much of them so picked selection of the guys I do who may be there in the 4th.

Scenario 3

Round 1- Tight end - Oj Howard - If we go tight end in the first it will be Howard, top tier talent.

Round 2- Dline - Mckinley/Taco Charlton/Barnett/Brantley/Mcdowell/Lawson/Harris/Tim Williams/Rivers/Tomlinson - Huge selection of guys here, no doubt some will go in the first (Rivers/Mcdowell/Barnett/Lawson) but they might make it here

Round 3- Running back - Perine/Mack/Hunt/McNichols/Gallman/Hill- Same as above

Round 4- Guard/tackle - Siragusa/Pocic/Dorian Johnson/Conor Mcdermott/Asiata - Similar to above

Scenario 4- Unlkely but could happen

Round 1- Guard/tackle -  Lamp/Robinson -  Considered elite talents by many, not ideal but both talented

Round 2- Running back - Mixon/Williams/Kamara/Foreman - Good chance most of these are available here

Round 3 - Dline - Avery Moss/Wormley/Deatrich Wise/Godchaux/Vanderdoes/Ogunjubi/Kpassongon - Same as above

Round 4 - Tight end - Roberts/Butt/Leggett/Saubert/Sprinkle/Shaheen/Hikutini/ Jonnu Smith - Same as above

Scenario 5

Round 1-  Cornerback - Lattimore-  Only guy we could take there

Scenario 6

Round 1- = Dline - Thomas/Allen

Round 2- Running back - Mixon/Williams/Kamara/Foreman - Good chance most of these are available here

Round 3 - Cornerbacks - Corn Elder/Awuzie/Griffin/Jourdan Lewis/Myrick/Sutton/Robinson - Probably looking more at slot type guys than outside guys if we are drafting here

Round 4- Tight end - Roberts/Butt/Leggett/Saubert/Sprinkle/Shaheen/Hikutini/ Jonnu Smith

Scenario 7

Round 1- Safety - Hooker/Adams - Only two options at that spot

Round 2 - Cornerbacks - Sidney Jones/Conley/ Kevin King/Tabor/Tankerdsley/ Tre White/ Quincy Wilson - Highly doubt we go secondary with our first two picks but some guys who may make it to that spot.

Round 3- Running back - Perine/Mack/Hunt/McNichols/Gallman/Hill

Round 4- Guard/tackle - Siragusa/Pocic/Dorian Johnson/Conor Mcdermott/Asiata

Sorry for the long post but found it interesting for myself looking at potential combinations of picks like this. Feel free to jumble together your own scenario as I definitely didn't get every combination. Also I know some of those guys won't make it to those spots and that I missed some guys y'all like so feel free to add them in.

Which combination would be best for us??

I like scenario 1

But that changes if Thomas is off the board. Allen's shoulders are a concern for me.

Yeah if Thomas is gone it would make that pick so much harder.

I like the first one especially if Thomas is the pick. Actually if he he's available that scenario is pretty much the one I'd like for us in this draft (could swap 3rd and 4th round pick depending on who's available).

If Thomas is gone it makes the choice really harder.

If Thomas is gone, and I'm guessing he will be, I would be hoping for a trade down

Yeah if Thomas is gone and Allens injurys are serious enough it forces us to take a one of the the options, any team wanting to trade up would surely just trade with the titans or jets if they ain't going to pick a QB at#6

Ideal is scenario 4 via trading back. Mixon and Lamp/Robinson makes our offense better more than any other scenario. Otherwise 1, followed by 2 if we got a guard in the second round instead. I could probably get behind most of these though

1 is by far the best and it's not close.

This is a scenario I like a lot.

Unless they are thinking QB in the mix.  Then, I'd go:

D-Line   (this requires Thomas being there and/or trusting Allen's medical report)

Guard

QB   (Webb/Peterman)

RB

TE  (Sprinkle, Kittle or Hikutini)

Definitely feel that guard should be our main aim at round 2. There will be starting talent there and is our biggest need by far imo

Probably #1, although if we trade down I can see #4 happening.

That said, the ultimate scenario would be my Fanspeak Mock Draft using their simulator...

  • R1 - DE Solomon Thomas

  • R2 - CB Marcus Lattimore

  • R3 - G/T Dion Dawkins

  • R4 - TE Lance Leggett

  • R5 - RB Kareem Hunt

  • R6 - QB Jerod Evans

  • R7 - FB Freddie Stevenson

  • R7 - NT Stevie Tu'ikolovatu

I had a feeling you'd go for the one with Foreman at round 2!

Pretty simple to me, if Scenario 1 is Thomas then it's that. If it's Allen then scenario 3.

Coughlin when asked if winning will be a focus: "What the hell else is there? This is nice and dandy, but winning is what all this is about."
