Brandon Allen?

Allen will definately be the better option if BB5 faulters. It's been said by some players and others outside of the origination that has an insider's knowledge. I can't wait to see Allen throw to Westbrook. It's going to be electrifying.

Quote:I'm not so sure about this. When you watch Brandon throw it's easy to be impressed. He's got one heck of an arm.... much better, for instance, than the Texans qb Deshaun Watson. Moreover, the Jaguars intentionally not getting a qb in this draft or even in undrafted free agency suggests they really do like Brandon Allen afterall. I only hope he gets a legitimate chance to beat out Chenne in camp for the backup spot.

Agreed.

Secret Weapon.

Unlike Blake who released his offseason pass on Twitter, Brandon Allen is keeping his pass secretive.

Quote:This isn't even true because he never was given a chance to beat out Henne as a rookie. He performed great in the Preseason as a rookie, but that didn't matter because Henne had already been handed the backup role. This year, however, should be different since Allen has now been here a while. There's no reason he shouldn't get that chance to prove he's better than Henne, and I'm convinced he is.

I almost agree with you except for the last sentence.  While physically yes Allen may be the better option than Henne, but keep in mind... he doesn't have any "real" game experience.

I see it this way.  Perhaps the coaches are actually really developing a young quarterback in Allen and keeping Henne as insurance.  Remember, they just re-signed Henne to a 1 year deal a few months ago and I predict that he is gone at the end of this coming season.  In the meantime should Bortles struggle or get injured, we have a serviceable game manager that won't lose games for you.  Contrary to the general consensus on this board, Henne isn't that bad, he's just not a franchise quarterback or a viable option for the future.

Depending on what Bortles does this coming season and assuming he does well, I can see possibly moving Allen to a backup role and possibly picking up another young quarterback in next year's draft to develop.  If Bortles doesn't show improvement and plays bad then the option is to either go with Allen and get a free agent as insurance, or get a free agent to assume the starting duties and search for the future franchise quarterback in next year's draft.

Quote:If Bortles crashes and burns this year, I'm all for skipping over Henne and letting him play. Why not? He's sat on the bench for a year (something I wish Bortles had done).  Let's see what we've got.

That's what we should have done the last 2-4 games of last season.  He'd at least be a known instead of a complete unknown.

I think Henne only has $500,000 guaranteed with a $750,000 roster bonus on Sept 7th. So it would not cost much to cut him if Allen is a lot a better.

Nah, he really is that bad. Henne stunk up the field the last time he played years ago.

He definitely did stink the last game he played which is why Bradley was forced to make the switch.  The two previous games that year were better especially considered the turnstile the OL was early that year.  The Redskins sacked him 10 times which might have something to do with how he did in the following week's game in Indy.  So, I have to agree with the previous poster, he gets a bad rap basically because he's an average player but as a backup that's generally what he's supposed to be.  If he was great, he'd be starting.

I'm condescending. That means I talk down to you.

I mean until you start the kid you really never know. Think about the circumstances with Brady. If Bledsoe never goes down, who is to say Brady doesn't go to a different team or get cut? Or simply flame out of the league for never getting a shot? He took advantage of the opportunities given and he balled out. Multiple titles later the rest is history. I really hope if we suck this year, Allen sees the field for a handful of games. You do not know for sure until the guy plays when it matters.

He showed flashes in preseason playing with a horrid line and the 2nd team WR's. I thought he looked better than Henne last year during preseason. Tie goes to experience but hopefully he pushes Henne out the door this time around.

No pain, no gain.

I doubt the Jags go with 3 QBs on the roster this year.  Since they gave Henne a contract extension, that would mean Allen would be the odd man out.  If Blake flames (which I don't believe will be the case with improved running game), we will be drafting in the Top 10 again.  A QB will be a priority in the first round next year.

That extension means little for Henne. The Jaguar know that Allen has an arm, and they know that Henne hasn't even thrown a pass in a game in years. If anything, they'll compete, and if they keep only two it's my hunch that the two will be Bortles and Allen.

Quote:I want Allen to be Qb2 and I want Henne gone. Hes a good guy, but a terrible QB. Let Allen get the reps with the 2s all camp and if Blake is a hot mess again see what you have with Allen, and then go draft your new shiny QB out of USC Smile

If Blake doesn't impress this year, I'm for doing what it takes to move up in the draft next year for Darnold.

I've never understood gus' and the team's determination to keep henne hanging around, "mentoring" bb5...seriously?... knows the playbook?...was never enough to really be productive.

Holds the clipboard well to help maintain a high level of mediocrity?  CHECK!

Drafting Allen was a good start , apparently reading BB5 the riot act after gus leaving was a huge help (I hope)...Coach Doug & Coach Tom have banned ice cream and ping pong tables. Time to get down to some REAL football.

For camp, just move henne to #3 or even cut him....you can always get him back if everything goes to total garbage.

The time with the Jags was the easiest money a man ever made besides winning the lottery.
