Smoot

Could have drafted a good TE with our 3rd pick, but it's Smoot point now.
Actually, like the pick. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
All these pass rushers are getting me a little giddy.
Keep in mind that Fowler has been doing focused this offseason on improving his pass rushing and looks to impress out of the gate. You'd think the writing is on the wall for a guy like Jonathan Woodard who spent last year's rookie season on IR, but I'd love it if they were to find a way to keep him too just as one more rusher. Woodard is a natural pass rusher who can rush from anywhere on the DL. The Chris Smith trade for a 2018 pick keeps looking better.

Six Months ago, MMQB listed three players that they said we should be aware of in the upcoming draft.
Guess who the edge rusher is? http://video.search.yahoo.com/yhs/search...aa2a425b34

Lageman said that he thinks he had more upside that Feeney so he loves the pick.
The only real ding on Smoot is his low sack count this past year, but he can sack the QB. Check out this video of his career sacks...

https://youtu.be/iyiYEia5UmM There's no sound to this video, but his sacks are almost textbook. I'm reminded of watching Bobby McCray that one year. In particular, check out his bend. I also found this quote in his official college bio regarding his senior season...

Ranked as the 20th best player in college football by Pro Football Focus during the preseason.

I noticed that he played the strong side most of the year and either teams ran away from him (other than Michigan) or they double teamed him a lot.
He dropped 10 lbs off his Jr. playing weight to play in Lovie's system. Still, his bull rush is strong and combine it with his rip move around the end, he definitely has some pass rush potential. When he gets his weight up to 265 to 270 lbs, I think he will become like Olivier Vernon. I am not sure he will ever be a 10 sack guy, but if he gets his 5 to 8 sacks per season and creates a sufficient number of QB Hurries, I think he will be a great addition to the Jags D-Line. Looking at Smoot's stats, he appears to have stepped up his game midseason. He sort of had a slow start with no sacks over his first five weeks. Then came week six at Rutgers in a game where Smoot had 4 solo tackles, 1 assist, 3 TFLs for 13 yards, 1 sack for 6 yards, 1 forced fumble and 2 QB hits. His last four sacks came in the final five weeks including two sacks in the last game of the season at Northwestern. He had a huge final game.
Here is Smoot at Northwestern...
https://youtu.be/hRgeDNwte2o
Be sure to also check out Carroll Phillip's sack at the 3:06 mark.

The quaterback musty go down and he must go down hard. The more players you get to achieve that objective, the better. Welcome to Duval, get ready to get hit.
Respect the game. Play with a sense of urgency.
1.) Take care of the ball. Win the turnover battle. 2.) It's all about 3rd down. Win on 3rd down to win the game. 3.) Playmakers make plays. The only reason that you put your uniform on is to make plays. In order to EARN your paycheck, you must make plays. Learn from the great collapse of 2023.

And he mentioned how Hardy Nickerson told him "Nah, nah.. we don't blitz. We rely on our ends. They're awful good. We can speed rush and get it done..." Thanks for sharing too, btw. I don't like how he keeps getting sealed for some big holes. Mostly one on one with a blocker.
Now lemme think... :geek: What should my avatar....
This guy to me feels like a classic wide 9 defensive end. I think you put him out waaaaaayyyyyyy outside the tight end in the nickel package and kick Calais Campbell inside to rush the passer.

Yeah I see Smoot as what we used to term out "third LEO" in certain packages such as their former "Lightening Package." In such a package you very well might see Calais kick inside with Smoot at LDE, Fowler at RDT and Ngakoue at RDE. I'm assuming here that Ngakoue and Fowler are their top two RDEs, although I wonder about the two UDFA DEs vying for that 2nd RDE spot with Fowler possibly moving to SLB behind Poz. At any rate, that's just for certain formations. For the most part I see him being molded into the player that Calais Campbell is. I see him sticking to Calais like glue soaking up the advise and training while rotating with Calais on game day. With Smoot already more accustomed to rushing from the LDE spot, he should catch on quickly.

With Smoot already more accustomed to rushing from the LDE spot, he should catch on quickly. While I think he'll benefit greatly from Campbell, it's hard for me to imagine him playing the same brand of ball since Campbell's size and incredibly long arms are a big part of his game. Smoot weighed only 215 pounds entering college. He isn't a naturally large man like Campbell, is nearly 4 inches shorter than Campbell, lacks the lower body mass preferred for the position and has average length in his arms. I see him as a talented project. I expect very little from him in year one but he'll be fun to keep an eye on. ![]() Quote:While I think he'll benefit greatly from Campbell, it's hard for me to imagine him playing the same brand of ball since Campbell's size and incredibly long arms are a big part of his game. Indeed Campbell outweighs Smoot by a good 40 lbs. ... it's time for Smoot to bulk up.

And from "the way Fowler played last year". On a side note, it seems like we have a minimal # for the NT position and like 6 Big Ends. It's gonna be interesting with Campbell, Smoot, the undrafted guy supposed to be a gem, Demmick and Jonathan Woodard having been drafted with somewhat high hopes for his draft position. They all project to play that LDE and I'm sure there's a couple I'm missing.
