On a side note, it seems like we have a minimal # for the NT position and like 6 Big Ends.  It's gonna be interesting with Campbell, Smoot, the undrafted guy supposed to be a gem, Demmick and Jonathan Woodard having been drafted with somewhat high hopes for his draft position. They all project to play that LDE and I'm sure there's a couple I'm missing.

 

They definitely have the numbers at strong side end as of now, but that will surely dwindle as cuts come along. 

 

The NT position seems to be emphasized less and I wonder how much Wash intends to field a "true nose tackle."

 

Right now they have Abry Jones, Louis Nix and Stefan Charles on the roster at that position, but I believe they intend to play plenty of nickel downs featuring Campbell and Malik as interior pass rushers.  So, keeping two of those from the three aforementioned may be their only plan for NT. (With a developmental guy on the PS in case of emergency.)

The "undrafted guy supposed to be a gem" is Phillips... he's the guy who played the weakside DE spot opposite his teams stronside DE, better known as Smoot. At 242 lbs, Phillips strictly projects to the "weakside DE" aka RDE aka LEO spot. Smoot does seem a tad small for a strong DE, but that is his natural position out of college.


 

Woodard might fit more as a SLB than a strong DE, although I agree he's a strong DE.


 

Dimmick is definitely a strongside DE having put up 38 reps on the bench. He's the same size as Smoot and was a bit of a sack master in College, but his best moves are his bull rush and his chop. The knock of Dimmick is that he's "stiff as a board."


 

 

Here's how I basically see the DL numbers...

I've watched Smoot's highlights and I somewhat see what the Jaguar Brass sees. He provides quality depth at the position to say the least. Smoot will be someone to recon/w for sure.


I like the pick while we as fans have to believe in the scouting departments abilities of evaluation(s).

Yeah... me too. The second you read any report on Ngakoue you knew he was a fantastic pass rusher... the dig was on Ngakoue was always his run defense, although he hasn't been that bad there.


 

With Smoot there are questions. You see some talent there as more of a strongside rusher which is great, but he's a bit light. I'm optimistic for Smoot, but I'm nowhere near as sure about him.

It's a reason he got drafted and Carrol went undrafted although he had better stats last year. Clowney went 1st overall after putting up 3 sacks and being injured his final year.


The ability and potential is there.


Looks like we have our Justin Tuck, Osi, Kiwanuka and Strahan now.

I feel better about Ngakoue than any pass rusher since Brackens. He's got the tools, and he showed a lot more than flashes. He can only get better.

At the time the Jags selected with Pick 68, there was Dawuane Smoot, Jordan Willis, Tarrell Basham and Derek Rivers all on the board. I think the Jags may have taken Smoot over the other three due to the level of competition that Smoot faced in the Big 10. Willis faced Big 12 competition, while Basham faced MAC competition. Rivers is a small school phenom. The NFL is a big jump for most Dlineman and I am sure that facing Big 10 OT's that are more NFL ready was a leading factor in the selection of Smoot over the other three.

With Jackson, Campbell and Yan we are sitting pretty on the D-line. If Fowler decides to take that next step this year we will be a force on defense. Smoot would be icing on the cake he he can be a 5-8 sack guy. If Carroll is a diamond in the rough, well we all know what that means.


The depth and quality is there finally. They just need to perform.
