Rookie Mini Camp

#21

As mentioned I'm mainly looking forward to seeing everyone waking away healthy. Obviously we're still scarred from the Dante fiasco.

It's also going to be nice to see some of the snips of highlights they put up on the website. Just to see some of the guys running through drills with a Jags helmet makes the season feel so much closer than it did prior to the draft.

Lol! I shoulda added "drill" behind it, but ColoJag is cool too. And of course I'm kidding about wanting to see the Colorado Drill. Besides.  Robinson would engulf Smoot

Now lemme think...  :geek:  What should my avatar....

It appear you can only attend the rookie minicamp if you don't accrue the first season. Looking at their respective salaries on spotrac, both Woodard and Allen are making the amount for players with one accrued season suggesting neither is eligible for the minicamp. Moreover, according to
First Coast News
, the only first year players attending are Jamal Robinson and Nila Kasitati.

With that said, Marrone did say that four players were eligible, and I'm now thinking that the recently waived LB Marcus Rush would have been the fourth. I'm thinking the third is Larry Pinkard as he's a first year player who did not do anything last year and is still making rookie compensation just like Robinson and Kasitati. I suspect First Coast News just somehow totally missed PInkard.

With six WRs attending but Allen ineligible to attend, I expect they may bring in a couple workout QBs. I'll list the players on the roster expected to attend the rookie minicamp by their position (excludes workout players)...

  • WR DeDe Westbrook - yeah baby!

  • WR Jamal Robinson - tall WR at 6-4 who ran a 4.47 at his Pro Day. He's been with the team for a couple offseasons now.

  • WR Larry Pinkard - just a guy

  • WR Kenneth Walker III - 4.3 40 guy with a shot to win a roster spot as a backup split-end

  • WR Etta-Tawa Amba - eyeing the PS

  • WR Keelan Cole - vying for spot as a flanker behind Hurns and Lee; termed the "best WR in division II"

  • RB Leonard Fournette - Championship!!!

  • RB I'Tavious Mathers - a small, speedy RB who lacks wiggle; basically Corey Grant, but not quite so fast

  • RB Tim Cook - at 6-0, 242, you wonder if he's trying out for RB or FB

  • FB Marquez Williams - Caldwell's prized "wide-body FB"

  • TE Caleb Bluiett - ability to play ST might help him sneak onto roster

  • OT Cam Robinson - set to play LT at the minicamp

  • G Nila Kasitati - big guy, but a true long-shot

  • OT Avery Gennesy - more of an OT skill-set; needs to develop power as run blocker to play G

  • C Parker Collins - future PS Center?

  • DE Dawuane Smoot - needs to bulk up if he's to rotate with Campbell

  • DE Carroll Phillips - great shot at a roster spot as the 3rd RDE

  • DE Hunter Dimick - strongside, power DE is a bit stiff, but can bull rush

  • DT Tueni Lupeamanu - would need to knock Michael Bennett off roster

  • LB Blair Brown - needs to develop pass coverage skills quickly

  • LB Justin Horton - intriguing young LB with a shot at PS

  • LB PJ Davis - diminutive LB; just why?

  • CB Jalen Myrick - our new backup nickel, KR and gunner has serious speed

  • CB Jeremy Cutrer - impressive young CB needs to overcome skinny frame

  • CB Ezra Robinson - snuck into my top 30 ranking among CBs in this year's draft

  • S Charlie Miller - intriguing S was considered the best Ivy League safety last year

I'm joking, but you used a double negative earlier which technically read as though you want to see injuries.

I'm most interested to see how the new receivers look. Love the Westbrook pick, and getting Walker and Etta Tawa Amba. I think they posses a skil set that is crucial to the success of Bortles. And that is having the speed to get some separation, or having the ability to adjust to a poorly thrown ball. Arob has made Bortles look a little better than he actually is by high pointing 50/50 balls.

Without them even taking a snap at the rookie mini-camp, I'll attempt to rank the WRs...

  1. WR DeDe Westbrook

  2. WR Kenneth Walker III

  3. WR Jamal Robinson

  4. WR Keelan Cole

  5. WR Etta-Tawa Amba

  6. WR Larry Pinkard

Quote:I don't think Greene makes the roster this year. Wouldn't be surprised if he's cut this pre season. Right now it seems it'll be:

1. Allen Robinson

2. Allen Hurns

3. Marquise Lee

4. DeDe Westbrook

5. Open Competition

6. Open Competition

I think they'll try to roll with six receivers this year and cut back on the TE position since they're maintaining a FB. Coughlin is also expecting starters to contribute on special teams more this year. So that might allow them to scale back on defensive players.

The last two receiver spots I could see going to Brian Walters because of his ability in the slot and potentially Etta-Tawo. I think between Myrick and Westbrook they're pretty confident they don't need Greene as a special teams returner anymore. Greene hasn't really done anything to merit his roster spot the last two or three years.

Greene was dynamite on punt returns in 2015. I had him penciled in as our return man and slot guy for the next 5 years. It seems he lost his way in 2016. Player development is such a fickle beast.

I'm not counting him out, but they do have Dede now as our PR, and to be our slot guy he'll probably have to beat out Walters and Wynn. I'm not saying he can't do that. It's just he was a ghost last season so I'm starting to wonder if he's got what it takes to win the job again.

All of the Jags receivers have bailed Bortles out of poorly thrown passes repeatedly the past three seasons.  Yes, A-Rob is the most gifted at high-pointing the 50/50, but they've all bailed him out of inaccurate passes MANY times.  Just pointing that out -- as I think some are too hard on those guys for drops while not recognizing how often they have to reel in bad passes.

I also dig the Westbrook pick even though I said I'd be upset if they took a receiver before the fifth round. The value was too much to pass up. I also think he and Lee will help to prevent opponents from stacking the box to counter the run game.

I'm a big rooter on'r of Hunter Dimmick. I think he can be a force. Hoping his strength can get him out of situations his arm length may not.

I'm not so sure about Dimmick because he's not much of an athlete at all and has no real edge talent. Dimmick got his sacks by brute strength with his bull rush. He's powerful as heck, but in the NFL I fear that power might be mitigated.
