Quote:Very true. I love Bud Foster's defense at VT. It gave Seattle Kam Chancellor and Daryl Tapp, It closely resembles the Jaguars defense with regard to the secondary alignment and employing smallish pass-rush specialists. However, there is a tendency for his corners to strictly follow the receiver but never attempt to locate the ball. For some reason, the head-on-swivel technique is not taught there. I've watched this phenomenon with amazement over the years -- e.g., Ronyell Whitaker got beat deep against FSU in the national championship and other corners got abused repeatedly in the same games because their necks are too stiff.

You can only "coach up" so much. Man is difficult to play. You're put on an island. Some people have a knack for the ball. Others struggle to follow cues (eyes, hands of receiver, etc.) At the same time, even the best get beat sometime. As aggressive as Foster runs the defense, Beamer (a former DB himself) is conservative. Crawl before you walk, walk before you run. I doubt it's something they don't coach. It's more likely they are being taught to not take a risk if they aren't sure of themselves. Stay with the man, instead of looking back while your man burns past you. If you are in position, you at the very least have a chance to make a play (even if you don't come up with it.) On the other hand, if you aren't in position, you've got little chance to make a play (unless you have rare, freak athleticism to make up for your mistake.)
