Overtime rules

#41

Quote:Yes, and the overtime game between the Bengals and Panthers went well into the second quarter of the Seahawks game.  Your point isn't really valid.  Overtime is always going to take up extra time.

Plus, in my opinion, the college version is much more exciting than the NFL overtime.  It seems like a dull ending to a great game, especially the Carolina/Cinci game.
Sorry, IMO, the OT rules were changed because too many fans complained about the fairness of the old OT rules. The percentage of the difference between the winners and the losers of the coin toss winning the game were miniscule, at best.

It's just more of the "Let's make everything fair for everybody" crowd flexing its muscle. If you can't win a game in 60 minutes you don't deserve to win it, anyway.

How is a field goal attempt as time expired a dull ending? It was exactly like a fourth quarter two-minute drill for the Bengals, who had to call timeout with two seconds left.

Quote:I don't understand why everyone is complaining about a tie. At least each team had a chance to do something about it.

And it makes the tie-breakers a lot more simple, should it come to that.

Where is it written that there should always be a winner?

This .

I understand playing until a score in the playoffs, but I think for safety reasons, the league dosent want to play more than a 75 minute regular season football game.

Whether someone has a liberal, or conservative viewpoint, a authoritative figure should not lock a thread for the sole purpose to get the last word in all the while prohibiting someone else from being able to respond.

That is another reason I don't like forcing the game to continue after the tie is broken. What if someone tore his ACL after Mike Nugent broke the tie in overtime? It could have happened.

Why not just not have overtime at all unless in the playoffs.what's wrong with a tie?

No team likes ties. They want to win.

Where did I say I disagreed with the percentage of the person winning the coin toss?

In the grand scheme of things...players, coaches, and fans dont like ties.  So if a tightly contested game makes it to 60 minutes, there should be overtime.

If we want to talk about fairness, teams each getting a chance from the 25 yard line with almost identical chances is the fairest possible means.

Tie game....great game that may have had an exciting ending, but still ended in a tie.  Boring.

What if someone hurt their neck celebrating a touchdown....oh wait, that happened, but everyone wants bigger td celebrations.

You contradicted yourself on this above....you said it was an exciting ending even though he missed the field goal.  Still a tie....

So what if it is still a tie? Anytime a field goal is attempted as time expires on the fourth quarter game clock it is exciting. The Bengals had to call timeout with two seconds left to give him time to kick it. I don't see how that is not an exciting way to end a 15-minute overtime.
