Quote:I'd never heard of a cheese steak until I spent a year in Wilmington, DE. I thought at the time, and still do, that the first one I had, from a place with the imaginative name of "Cheese Steaks", was the best sandwich I've ever had. Nothing special, just onions and peppers on it, but a simple masterpiece. Damn thing melted in my mouth.

There was a place at the south part of Jacksonville Beach on A1A that made cheese steaks that came pretty darn close. Just a walk up window IIRC, with some picnic tables outside. The owners were from Philly, and got their bread, the key to a great cheese steak, shipped in from there.

You're correct.  The key is the roll.  The best places get them from a bakery called Borzillo.  I don't know if it's the same place, as this is a eat in, sit down place.  But in Atlantic Beach there is a place called Philly's Finest and those guys are indeed from Philly.

There's another place down in the heart of St. Augustine...can't remember the name...but same type of deal.

Both places get their rolls from Borzillo.  This would also explain why the rolls are so good at Pudgie's.  It's about 5 minutes away from the bakery.

And after all these years I still add a darn "i" to the name, it's actually Pudge's.  Gotta go to the original on PA202 though.  The locals have always called it Pudgie's.

They have one of those eating challenges there.  I can't imagine any human being able to do it.  A large cheesesteak (basically a two-foot cheesesteak) and a tray of fries.  I don't know what the prize is other than a heart attack and/or indigestion.

Lugi's was horrible

Luigi's on the other hand has a fantastic meatball sub, best in town.

I miss Miami Subs!

We have a liquor store here called Bals Liquor. I drive by it all the time and laugh every single time.

It's a good thing that's not the other way around. Not many could resist laughing at that.

I survived the Gus Bradley Error.

Lubi's on Sunbeam - I used to work in Madarin and after running out of places to eat for lunch I offered up Lubi's as a joke to my coworkers.  Having not grown up in Jax I didn't know that it had quite a history, I just saw it as some hole in the wall with a funny name and was trying to be humorous.  Well my coworkers all got excited and told me how good it was so I gave it a chance.  Gotta say walking in and seeing the old decor and dirty restaurant was not a good start, then the menu was not really easy to decipher, and finally the cashier threw my stuff in a counter top microwave and I thought a trip to the ER for food poisoning was in my near future.  I was hesitant to try the food I ordered, just getting the same thing everyone else ordered, but my friends convinced me to eat it.  Oddly enough the mix of nuked ground beef, sour cream, marinara, mozzarella cheese and onion was pretty darn good.  The worst part is that it was the type of place that you would crave more and more the more often you would go there.  I haven't been in probably 7 years having moved away and no longer working in that part of town, but I think I know what may be for lunch tomorrow.

Quote:I'm just meh on Angie's. I got one of their special subs the last time I went. It had pork and some other stuff on it. It was just ok. Kind of dry.

I'm sure it was what i chose, but I expected it to be much better. Plus the owner kind of seems like a tool.

Angie's is really overrated. Everything there is salty and dry.

Let's not forget European st if we are talking good, local sandwiches.

A good cheesesteak is one of life's simple pleasures.  IMO, Bongiorno's Philly Steak Shop in Mayport makes them as good and authentic as they get.

Kaishakunin for hire.

The Lubi's on Beach Blvd is still open. I go every now and again. The mozzarella lubi is still the best.

And when in Rochester NY, Nick Tahou Hots garbage plate is something you have to do.  Passed through on a business call once, glad we made the stop.
