Can the Jags create a contract then re-structure it after Mack signs?  IDK if something like that is legal, and it would require an unwritten agreement, but if Mack really wants out of Cleveland and its allowed....

 

The Jags will have to watch it to not get too fancy here....don't want to have the league or NFLPA come after us later because of some shady dealings, and then possibly lose future draft picks...

I figured it was probably not allowed.  Fortunately, I think next year the only contract that might cost even a little is CSIII and even that should be manageable, especially if he continues to play like he has, good but not great.  Russell Allen is just a guy.  Not bad, but not going to command any real money to keep.

He's a Center. 29 for a Center is not 29 for a RB....Look at the career Meester had - and to be honest, he was only "average" and lasted that long. If Mack stays healthy, he could play at a fairly high level into his mid-upper 30's. 

 

In 2013,  Dominic Raiola had his best of his 13 NFL seasons despite being 34 years old.   To the point that PFF ranked him as the # 2 Center in the NFL for his 2013 performance.   There's indeed no question that Alex Mack can be very effective for many more seasons if he stays relatively healthy.

Caldwell has shown that he can be patient.  Likely, they didn't just come out and offer him a bunch of money in order to drive the price down.  I don't think they are too worried about Cleveland matching.

Which is what makes it very scary and risky for Mack, if it's true that he doesn't want to be in Cleveland. He signs somewhere he wants to be, Cleveland matches, he's stuck where he doesn't want to be for years and years.

 

It's a tricky situation for all involved.

They might be considered different tags.  This could also be smoke.  If you make another team think that there is no way they would be able to get him for that amount, maybe they won't try.  Unnamed sources are always tricky.

I believe they can be tagged two years in a row but not three anymore.

For sure.  Mack's agent and Caldwell are going to have to really think this through before an offer is made.  Like the article said, it may be better for him to just roll with the transition tag so he is guaranteed to get out of there sooner.  I'm sure Mack won't sign a contract unless he thinks he it has a high percentage of succeeding.

There is beauty in this negotiation with Mack.

 

1. The Jags Sign Him: A tremendous upgrade to our offensive line.  We need a player who can lead these young guys.  Mack and Beadles along with a young Joeckle sounds like a very good start.

 

2. The Jags Don't sign him.  If the Jags throw an offer and the Browns match it still forces another afc team to use cap space.  That could benefit the Jags going into the next offseason.

I thought about posting a new thread about State Tax ramifications concerning Alex Mack.


I am not starting a discussion on taxes, if you have strong beliefs on taxes, post in the Sideline. Not here!


 

A casual look shows that in Ohio he may be responsible for:


 

5.92%      State Tax


1.00%      Cleveland


2.25%      Township


1.25%       County/Local


 

This is an average figure based on locations where high income individuals might choose to live.


There is another set of education, property and associated taxes that are more location specific.


 

After speaking with an Enrolled Agent I know in Shaker Heights with first hand knowledge of


NFL Player exposure to taxes, she states that the Jaguars are playing with a 15% advantage over


Cleveland on taxes, fees and additional levy's.


 

That and the fact Mack would prefer to play elsewhere and has an agent who is extremely creative in packaging a deal


to make his client happy would all be advantages to the Jaguars. Her family are legacy ticket holders and she loathes us. Good.


 

SO, by the Jags being patient and seeing what the market would bring, knowing that their intended acquisition would like to move and having
an additional 15% or so to play with while packaging an offer to the total disadvantage of the Browns, with help of his agent is all good. 
I would not care to sit across the poker table with Dave.
