The "good" news about this is that we don't have many players we need to re-sign in the next couple seasons, so overpaying a couple linemen shouldn't hurt us in the long term.

Supposedly there is a player exit clause after the 2 years is up; so Mack could leave Cleveland and the deal after 2 if they match. I don't see this offer as being so crazy like it was sounding, but there are some things in there that could cause Cleveland to pause and think. I'm not sure where this is going to go right now.

I think the best way to have made it tough for Cleveland to not match would have been to allocate alot of the money in year 2 when Cleveland had their other player contracts coming up. Now, this makes it even easier for Cleveland as they can just release Mack after 2 years if need be to make room.

For instance our whole line next year (inlcuding Mack) will cost the same as only Thomas + Mack for the Browns.

I would be fine with a 2nd round pick, most will disagree, but how many pro bowl players do you find in the second round?

 

Ironically,  the Jaguars probably have had as many, if not more Pro Bowl caliber seasons from their 2nd Round selections than their 1st Round selections.    Having said that,  there's no question that the chances of landing a Pro Bowl caliber player are greater in the 1st Round.   

 

When thinking about the situation,  a 2nd Round pick is what came to mind in terms of what the Browns would want for Alex Mack.   Where as the Jaguars probably wouldn't be willing to give up that much because of what some others in this thread mentioned:   the cost of the contract on top of the trade compensation.
