Cleveland matches Jags offer for Mack

Quote:Yeap no way we don't match it. Jags are actually saving us money lol. We were ready to pay him close to 11 and you guys signed him to a 2 year 18 million dollar contract.

Edit* Thats all if this is the true offer of course.
He hasn't been signed to anything yet.

Lololplplpl. Wow just shut up.

Serious question, not trying to stir the pot, but if that's all he wanted in the first place, why didn't the Browns just sign him in the 1st place?

I'm thinking this is set up for a trade, I don't think Dave Caldwell is naive enough to just do the contract talks for another time. This smells like how some teams trade a player to a team only if the player agrees to restructure... The only difference is it's before the trade and not after.

Sorry didn't mean to gloat. I was just excited if that was true. I do have to admit that it sounds suspicious cause it looks they offered a deal the Browns would definitely match. Maybe if there is a player we want at 3 that we want we will trade him to you guys with our 4th for your 3 and maybe a 3rd round pick of something.

You might want to wait before beginning your little celebration.  Until there's an actual deal on the table with his name on it, there's nothing to gloat about.

You're right I admitted that on one of my last posts. Nothing is final.

5 years 42 million 18 million the first two years with a opt out after 2 and team can't tag him. this according to ian rappaport

Now here's another wrinkle: Mack gets $8 million FULLY guaranteed in Year 3 if he doesn't void after 2 years. So that's up to $26m in gtd $.

Because of the timing of the void after 2 years of Alex Mack’s deal, the team — Browns or Jags — can’t tag him after 2015. That’s big

Being a Browns fan that still isn't too bad. Basically either team gets to prove it's worth in 2 years or he leaves. If he stays you get him a 8 million which isnt bad for one of if not the best center in the league.

Supposedly, the 3rd year also guarantees 8 mil also. So 26 m guaranteed in the 3 years. Again, nothing definite yet; these are all speculations right now. But let's say Cleveland wants to match, maybe they fret Mack from not exiting after 2 and they don't want to guarantee that much?

No way the Browns sign-and-trade - they'd have all that guaranteed money as dead money on their cap.

There has to be more to all this.  I don't know who is going to end up signing him, but Caldwell doesn't take the time to do this for something as simple as what was first being reported.  i think everyone needs to chill and see what the offer is.

Is it possible that they trade picks and agree not to exercise transition tag?  Is that even legal?

No, not legal according to CBA - Article 9 Section 3 if memory serves.

Agree.  In the end, I expect the Browns to have to bite off more than they were willing to chew if they want to keep him.  Will probably make their cap situation more difficult than ours in the second, third years.  At bare minimum, it's probably going to be something a lot more difficult to sign than their "immediately" boast.

I want to believe this as well because I read on one of the articles that said Caldwell said that this isn't a contract they are truly happy with. I don't see this contract being that bad. There has to be other details not yet leaked.
