Cleveland matches Jags offer for Mack

Quote:Are they going to tape it back together after they maul it over for a bit?
Ah yes.  Mull.  Changes everything I wrote.

Quote:Except you both know that's not possible to do. They have the tag, and they have more cap space. There was literally nothing more that the Jags have been done. Any disappointment you're feeling now is merely based on your own wrong expectations going in.

An extra million or so PER (combined with the other stuff) might have been enough to make the Browns say no.

Contract aside, the Brownies do have to consider the PR side of this deal. Mack's already come out and publicly stated he wants out of Cleveland and the owner has already come out and publicly stated he won't hold him hostage. Now, add back in a tight deal with some sexy language, add back in the fact they have lots of contracts to negotiate coming down the pike and it starts to look like they might have reason to let him slide.

If the other stuff isnt enough to make them say no, why would an extra million? They have more room than us.

Yes, but at some point, you have to say, this is one player out of 53.   Do we really want to lose all our fiscal discipline over one player, a center?   That would not bode well for our future.   There has to be a limit.

Doubtful...but let's pretend anyway

Quote:Are you going to offer your suggestion of what could have been done to create this iron clad contract or not?

Good luck. He's too busy being raked over the coals.

Quote:Do you guys know if there was even talks of extension or new contract at all last year or before free agency started. Did Macks agent ever offer up a deal before free agency and did the Browns turn it down?

Yes, they apply to Jax as well and quite honestly,I am not sure any center is worth the risk. But I'll sure welcome him here if it happens. Hell it's only two tickets and a bunch of swag and stadium booze and parking worth of my money.
The previous regime and Mack didn't get along. No offers exchanged hands or were even discussed prior to free agency. In fact, when the new staff was hired, Mack was in South America doing volunteer work. They were only able to meet for the first time 2 days before free agency.

I'll tell you what would have made them decide not to match.   A ridiculous contract that we wouldn't want to sign, either.

So $1 million is all it would take?

Yeah, money is not the problem, its the way the contract looks. Browns have more money than Jags.

Bingo. And there's the rub; you have to make it good enough so you can live with it, but bad enough that they won't want to.

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!

If they had done an extra million you would have just said the same thing, "maybe one extra million!". No you idiot, the Browns have more money than the Jags.

No, he hasn't. At any time. This is completely a creation of the internet. Mack has said that he likes Cleveland and is open to staying there. If he was desperate to leave Cleveland he would have signed the tender and left next year when they were less likely to tag him again rather than giving them the opportunity to lock him up for at least 2 years.

Quote:We'll see how tough it is when/ if they match it on the same day Mack signs.

Here's TMD's post on the Browns matching immediately.

He certainly does not come off as a happy camper. I understand he is a professional and will perform no matter what but who knows what goes on sub consciously? I just wonder along with the other wrinkles do the Browns really want him if he does not want to be there.

More than likely he's just trying to and is going to get paid and don't really care where it comes from.

Looking to troll? Don't bother, we supply our own.

Quote:This is where I see the concern for the Browns. Many factors could come into play that will demand year three guarantee of 8 million with the possibility he won't be able to play. This is not a good deal for either team for a center but is obviously one that the Jags felt they could stomach. The Browns may as well.

Even if the Browns didn't match the offer and Alex Mack wouldn't be able to play for the Jaguars in season # 3 of the contract,   I think the Jaguars will be fine from a salary cap standpoint.    The Jaguars don't seem to have many players currently on the roster with contracts expiring the next 3 seasons that can expect to command lucrative contracts.   Or even close to that level.   With the NFL Salary Cap expected to increase significantly in the next few seasons,  the Jaguars appear a long way from being in salary cap trouble.     The Jaguars appear closer to having to deal with meeting the mimimum NFL salary cap threshold level than having a shortage of cap space.

On the other hand,  the Browns have some players who will be costly to retain in the next few seasons.    Alex Mack's contract could limit their flexibility regarding upcoming UFA's.   Hence,  at the very least the Browns have a difffcult decision they need to make in the next 5 days regarding Mack's offer sheet.

Quote:Well, no, my opinion has been pretty consistent in this thread and was the first mentioned so.....I'd say in order of "siding" it would be a bit reversed. I'm not "siding" with anything but the truth.
No your opinion all along was that even if the Browns matched you would be encouraged that they showed good effort in getting a marquee FA. Then you believed PFT's bogus report and completely did at 180 on your word.

Then you found out the deal included the most money in C history, more than double the guaranteed money in C history, an opt out, a no trade, and a no tag clause, and you still decided you were going to go back on your word. Just admit the Jags did all they could, but a team that had the trump card in every way is probably going to use said trump card. The Jag made a heck of an effort but unfortunately it probably won't work out, that's life sometimes.

Quote:Yep.....Other than the 2 minor clauses
Pray tell then sir, what major (non CBA breaking) clauses could the Jags have used? Seems to me like adding opt out, no trade, and no tag clauses is about as good as you can do.

All you people can do is name call.

I , they and everyone knows they have more available cap space than we do. It doesn't change the fact that everyone has their price. You act as if Cleveland would have matched ANY number. They wouldn't have. Theres a chance an extra million per year might have done the job.
