Cleveland matches Jags offer for Mack

(This post was last modified: 04-11-2014, 04:33 PM by boldcitytombo.)

Stupid stork? Dude just won a championship! Would you rather switch someone on our o-line to center OR draft a solid

center?

Caldwell had the right player, but obviously failed pretty bad on the contract. It was way too easy for Cleveland to match.
Caldwell didn't fail at all. As other have mentioned, it is going to be the highest contract for a center in the history of the NFL. Not really sure what else Caldwell could have done. Except destroy the cap.

My hunch is the Jaguars plan in signing Alex Mack to an offer sheet went well beyond whether the Browns matched the offer sheet.   It's worth looking at the situation from a standpoint that more and more players are going to want to play for the Jaguars under the current team brass.

Looks like we'll be settling for a stupid Stork now. yay.

We gave money to him. He's the highest paid center in the league now thanks to us. Sometimes you have to when enough is enough.

Especially considering he's not even one of the top 5 centers in the draft. That makes sense. But keep trolling the fans of your "favorite team".

Quote:That was fun while it lasted. I feel nothing but good about the whole scenario. I feel as if it was a win win situation for our franchise. Hopefully he wont get struck in the head with a freaking beer bottle.

Exactly.  It was good for the Jags either way.  At least we know they're not playing around as far as the rebuild process is concerned.  They made a well thought out offer for a top tier player, and they forced Cleveland to spend large to keep him.  We'll figure out the center situation soon enough.

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I already said it, another MIL or 2 per year. Would have made Cleveland at least have to think twice.

Not sure exactly what you expected. Anymore and he starts getting into elite left tackle money.

Thank God they didn't get him.  It makes it much easier for you to soil yourself this way.  Let the diva whinefest begin!

Great point.  D6 always level headed which is refreshing considering the posts we get around here.

We had a number.  Some fans will be disappointed we didn't go higher and others recognize that Caldwell has a plan and part of that is being disciplined.  Now you may disagree with it, but I can respect that they made their best offer and let the chips fall where they may.  Part of free agency.

I think that is the biggest thing missed here from certain posters.  It isn't like we low balled the guy.  Lol, it was the most favorable center contract not only in terms of money, but optional clauses as well.  If the browns want him that badly then they are going to get him.

The irony in you complaining about people name calling is that it is one of the key parts of your schtick

There wasn't much that Caldwell could do, really.

Might be spiteful, but I kinda hope he regresses and they have to pay him $8M for sitting on the bench in year 3 >_>

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

Please don't encourage him to go to the Eagles board.  This village still needs our idiot.

Right.  And you know this because that extra nickel or two you negotiated to get above minimum wage worked out splendidly.

Yes, indeed, you predicted it.  Congratulations.

But the part about "failed pretty bad on the contract.." I think is unnecessarily negative.  Yes, we could have written a contract that Cleveland would not have matched.   But apparently we weren't willing to offer that.   Maybe it was prudence, or fiscal discipline.   Caldwell and the rest of the brass have always said they will be disciplined about how they build this team, and apparently a contract Cleveland was not willing to match would have been too much for the Jags to swallow either.

That'll show them.  Instead of thinking once, they would have to do it one more time.  Based on them signing him this quickly, 1 or 2 million would not have made a difference and the Jags would still be looking for a center in the draft.
