Quote:rollerjag - 2112 made a persnickety remark regarding Winger above, I simply asked him to expound about his comment. I was awaiting a response from him.

I agree that we all have different tastes. THats fine. No one taste is really better than another. THats why I asked him to further explain himself. I wasn't sure if it was a "taste" thing or he was trying to imply with his snarky comment that said band was "talentless", and if that was indeed the case, he would indeed be "wrong" because at that point its not a question of "taste" anymore its a question of understanding musical ability.

I don't think you understand the premise of this thread's topic.

Heres another embarrassing one to admit i like...

this one might be the saddest song ever written....yet, its hauntingly beautiful. When he sings about his parents at the end, I admit to getting a bit of a frog in my throat a bit

Dude.... let me ask you something.... do you think that Winger (particularly in that song) aren't any good? If your answer is yes, I'll just have to dismiss you as another one who pretty much has no clue about what he's talking about. You may think Kip Wnger himself is lame (fair), but even he was a better vocalist than most that were fronting bands at that time. Metallica couldn't play some of the stuff Winger did, no - not because they didn't want to, because they simply weren't as talented. Reb Beach of Winger is a better guitar player than both Metallica players put together. I'd put him right up there with George Lynch and Dimebag Darrell.

Actually, Kip Winger musically destroys any of the crap Metallica commits to tape.  It's a little known fact that he's the one that demanded more musicality on the Winger records. Kip also composes classical music for orchestras.  And yes, Reb Beach is light years ahead of many guitar players.

I agree. When I said up there about if he (anon2112) thought Kip was "lame" I was referring more to his "stage antics", not his musical ability. Winger were fantastic musicians - a lot better than just about any of those popular bands of the time - and thats the point I was trying to explain. Winger is a punch line for so many, and yet, talent-wise, they were pretty darn good. I think every one of them were virtuoso level musicians and had background in classical/ jazz/ fusion etc.

I've never understood why Winger was the band picked by so many to mock.  There were so many untalented hair bands in the '80s to pick from, but somehow people picked the band that actually had good musicians.  I have a feeling they're just aping the Bevis And Butthead bit.

Along with my Hanson admission I also liked some of the Lilith Fair singers, particularly the lineup of the original in 97-98. I was in college at the time. Caught a lot of flak from some of my teammates. Couldn't care less though! I like what I like!

Sarah McLachlan, Paula Cole, Jewel, Joan Osborne.
