Beer probably isn’t the first thing to come to mind when you think of the word “monastery” – but since receiving official recognition on Dec. 10, Saint Joseph’s Abbey[Image: external-link.png] in Spencer, Mass., will become the first American brewery to be manned exclusively by Trappist monks.

Instead of a sign that says "Do Not Disturb" I need one that says "Already Disturbed Proceed With Caution."

The Westvleteren Brewery in Belgium (which is run by a trappist monastery) is considered by many beer aficionados as the best beer in the world.  But you have to go to the monastery itself to buy it, and quantities are strictly limited.

So those trappist monks do know how to brew some outstanding beer.

Chimay is a trappist beer.   I've had it and it is outstanding.   You can get it in Publix!

I had a Chimay at Hopjacks in Pensacola.  I think it had like 8 percent alcohol.

Poor monks.  Imprisoned and forced to make beer.  Release the monks!

Wait a minute...beer.  Keep the monks trapped!

Trappist Monks follow St. Benedict's Rule.   An underlying theme in their rules and adopted lifestyle is "pray and work."

I think we can safely say that those making beer are truly doing God's Work.

I won the 3 bottle Chimay sampler at our office Christmas party yesterday. I'm saving it for my birthday in two weeks!
