Hope you all gain a pound or two and enjoy some downtime.

Same to you, NYC. We always eat late, so later I'm having a glorious cheat meal after cutting back on the bad foods for the last several weeks in a bid to lose a few pounds. I'm really looking forward to the key lime pie afterwards.

Someone from work will see this but I don't give a [BLEEP].  A couple of years ago we were bought out by a Mexican company who proceeded to lay off numerous people during their implementation.  Several people have also quit because they got tired of dealing with them and my involvement with them, though minimal, has been unpleasant.  Now they're coming into town to hobnob with us for Christmas and I'm supposed to go to some [BLEEP] reception...on my time...on Thursday night so they can tell us how wonderful we are doing and their pie-in-the-sky ambitions for the company for next year.  Well [BLEEP] that.  I'm not going to spend four hours of my time to go to some [BLEEP] reception with a bunch of people that I don't want to see anyway.  If they want to schmooze with me, they can do it during work hours.  I guess I'll find out if I'm in trouble on Friday morning...when I don't show up on Thursday night.

Couple questions:

1. Is this a party with an open bar?
2. Do you have people you work with that you like?
3. Will food be provided?

If you answer 2 out of the 3 with yes, I would say go. You don't risk anything by going and if you can drink and eat on their dime, why not do it!

If it were 1 and 2 or 2 and 3...I'd consider going.  There is not a single person left at the company that I have any desire to spend non-working hours with.  Especially when it's an hour+ from home.

I don’t think you can get in official trouble for skipping off hour events but you might get some blacklist treatment

This is my husband. He is an introvert to the nth degree and is one reason why he works nightshift. If he's not being paid he doesn't go. Sometimes he doesn't go to stuff even if he would get paid because of the 2 hour roundtrip commute. He can kind of get away with it because of his schedule because he's got to sleep in order to work the 12 hour shift with the commute making it 14 hours. He does get dinged on his yearly evals though. He doesn't care.

I’m so glad I work for myself. Having said that, I’m flying solo tonight with my daughter. Wife has a dinner meeting for work at Ruth Chris. Or whatever that place is called. She normally is able to bring me a meal back. I fed my daughter hoping for the overpriced goodies. I’d hate for my beer to be my dinner tonight. Only because I drank my last one.

I'm certainly not introverted.  There are those on this board that could vouch for that.   Smile

Let's just say I'm disillusioned with the company and really have no desire to rub elbows with the people that [BLEEP] it up.

I don't do company parties (usually).  It's all so fake and everyone can't wait until it's over.  I would "back in the day" because so many of my friends were in fact my co-workers at the time, but so many of them have retired and/or gone on to other things.  What is left is all of the [BLEEP] kissers and people that I really don't like (but tolerate).

I don't know about your position, but for me when asked why I didn't go I am truthful and tell them "because I didn't want to".  [BLEEP] them if they can't accept that.

The get togethers I’ve been forced to go to for my wife’s work has actually been ok. Granted, I didn’t work there so I had nothing to lose, and my wife was half of the other people’s boss. Even kicked her boss’ [BLEEP] and the VP in horseshoes. Know who you’re messing with boys. But I gathered that with enough drinks, most were halfway fun. One even tried to “pick me up”. I thought that was funny. She was older. Not your first choice, but not your last either. it’s hard walking around being treated like a piece of meat. Smh.

As much as I've tried to convince myself to attend, I have failed.  I just have no interest.  I guess I'll just see if there are repercussions Friday.  I doubt there are any official ones.

Not sure what's wrong with your work parties but I go to most of the ones I can go to. Free drinks, free food, and I actually like most of my colleagues.

This is also me.

My line manager was saying how he was going to arrange a compulsory team building exercise as there was some divisions and cliques within the team. He said it was an activity that we would have to pay for ourselves, in our own time and we were unable to claim overtime for it. Needless to say, I didn't turn up. You can't enforce unpaid 'overtime', If I wanted to socialise with my colleagues, I'd do so under my own circumstances.

I'm also not going to the team Christmas party, I just don't enjoy the fakeness of it.. the only thing we have in common is the uniform, that's it.
