I pull a 6 iron. My son is natural ball striker. Body rotation, lag, swing plane and release just come naturally to him. He instinctively understands the mechanics of launching a golf ball. I asked him kiddingly if he was going to use a gap wedge. He laughed and said no, then teed off and hit a beautiful arc to the center of the green with little effort. Young people. A friend asked me the other day, "Do we ever go over the green with an approach shot?" I said, no, never, and more than half the time we're short of the green. So I've finally figured out that I'm over-estimating my distances with various clubs because I assume I'm going to hit the ball solidly, which doesn't happen but about 20% of the time, so if I had that 156 yard shot, what I do now is take a club that I think goes 165, inevitably mis-hit it, and get 155 as a result. That seems to work sometimes. If it goes straight. I was watching the Tour Championship yesterday, and Bryson DeChambeau hit an 8-iron to a pin that was more than 200 yards away. 8-iron! |
