That's his game.I beg to differ. He is a spread offense QB or the catchy NFL term is dual threat. Most scouting reports would state to beat him you would spy, keeping him limited to the pocket or keeping him “ in front of you”. He was a system QB in college and he is shaping up to be the same in the NFL. He has shown pocket ability but certainly not where he is comfortable. Few things wrong here. First off most of the NFL is "spread" now. Most of the teams you see use spread. Yes Mariota can make plays with his legs. As I said in college he did it alot and he is an elite athlete. He definitely is a dual threat QB. You're ignoring the important part of this which is the fact that the best part of his game in the NFL is his pocket passing ability. He doesn't pick apart teams with his legs or by running around. He does it by staying in the pocket and cutting teams up in the short and intermediate. Watching a few games of his will show you this. To summarize. Mariota was a very good pocket passer in college who made alot of plays with his legs too. A true elite dual threat QB. Destroyed teams in that fast paced Oregon offense. In the NFL Mariota still has the ability to make plays with his legs when he has to but pocket passing has been his bread and butter. He's been much more comfortable playing in there than he has been running around throwing outside the pocket ala Rodgers. You still have to account for him breaking lose every now and again. Any titans fan will tell you the exact same. He's been one of the best red zone QBs in the entire league. Little hint, that's not because he's running around the place. It's because he's very good operating in the pocket. And yes he hasn't played well this year at all. |
