Wildcard Possibilities

Oddly enough due to our tiebreaking win over Pittsburgh if they lose games and we can win the division we could get that sweet #2 seed and have a bye week and home game. Lots of football to be played and I'm sure we'll lose some games (hopefully not more than a couple) but anything is still possible. I took note of the Bills losing as they used to be ahead of us in the wild card race. We beat the Ravens and the Bills/Dolphins have a tough remaining schedule. As someone said they both play the Pats twice and each other. If we get to 9 wins I think we're secure with tiebreakers and all that to at least get the 6th seed. With our remaining schedule it's hard to see us not achieving that.

I feel real confident nine wins will get us a playoff spot.  It is such a huge drop off after the 5th team unlike the nfc being 9 10 teams deep. Looking at the schedule  it’s hard not see the last game versus the Titans for the division. As long as we beat the Texans and colts, we can still be back 1 game behind them for the final game.  Same for them if they’re are one game behind.

It's hard to imagine this team doing well in the playoffs after how the last game ended. Really sloppy play. Especially by bortles. Plus the lack of fournette being put in, not sure what hackett is thinking

And you're putting more stock in Sunday's game than the other 5 wins because...?

He was probably thinking that Fournette is clearly injured and not anywhere near 100%.  As well as three-fifths of the line blocking for him.  Pair that with nine in the box and Perryman shooting gaps with his hair on fire and you've got some really good reasons to limit Fournette.

To be a good team, you have to be able to win in multiple ways and multiple game tempos/situations. Plus, this team actually appears to be making in-game adjustments based on what they are seeing from the other team or the other teams' adjustments. Plus Perryman had been injured for a bit, they may not have had good tape to forecast what Chargers strategy would was going to be until the game started.

On Bortles, for every dumb decision he made, there was probably at least one big pass/deal pass play that was dropped or just out of reach. Thing with him has always be that when he get's in a funk, he cannot come back from it. That seems to no longer be the case.

What about the other 5 wins where we blew people out? We don't get to count those?

Jags won't face a better pass rush than the Chargers the rest of the year. Chargers are a good football team who seem to fold in towards the end of the game.

It's actually not hard to imagine this team winning in the playoffs. Defenses win championships and if there is anything this team is elite at, it's defense. We had a tough day running the ball but that seems to be the outlier compared to the other 8 games.

Yeah - there was a pass to Cole in the endzone just off the fingertips. Catchable - but would have been one heck of a catch. And then the same thing again with Lee down the sideline later in the game.  That big drop by Marcedes down the seam was a very well thrown ball too. Would have been first down at the opponents 42 - instead they punt from their own 26.  Blake's gonna hit on some of those kinds of plays in the coming weeks.

His accuracy on those types of throws has been more consistent. The one to Cole even had a (gulp) nice spiral!

While we all know too well how he can force balls inaccurately into coverage, the things he's doing when he's not screwing up actually seem to be getting a bit better.

unless we completely melt down at worst we should get the 6th playoff spot in the AFC

Which I will be totally happy with making the playoffs

It really just comes down to if you think the defense/special teams/run game can play lights out in all 3 phases for every playoff game. If they can then we have a shot, but against a string of playoff caliber opponents that's pretty unlikely. We'll need Bortles to come up big for us late in games, and we all know what the odds of that happening are.

Flacco did it and he's flat out terrible.

So much can change by the time the playoffs start.   There have been many teams in December that looked like they were at best headed for an early playoff exit but went on to win the Super Bowl.   I'm not predicting the Jaguars will win the Super Bowl this season.  But their chances of going deep in the playoffs look better right now than the Colts in the 2006 season after the Jaguars ran for 375 yards against them in early December that season.

All we have to do is get in, and from then, who knows.  The Giants were 10-6 and had to win 4 playoff games on the road, including the Super Bowl against the 18-0 Patriots.   And they did it.  It can be done.

They were 9-7 a couple years later in the rematch.

We've never seen playoff Blake. Who knows, he's about on par with regular season Eli. Maybe he'll become post-season Eli when we actually make it.

Dalton is usually good during the season and chokes in the playoffs. It's a whole new world after week 17.

I see exactly the opposite on this.

In seasons past, when the team ran into the slightest bit of adversity, they'd fold up like a cheap tent unable to recover.  Despite numerous challenges, most self-inflicted, the team was never out of the game, and ultimately found a way to win.  That's a huge improvement, and is a good indication that the team is finally turning a corner.

Crazier things have happened.

Flacco is pretty terrible and yet come playoff time, he's Montana. Same with Eli. All it takes is a hot streak like Blake played against the Ravens, Colts and Bengals.

Wrong. It's NEVER hard imagining the #1 scoring defense in the NFL going far in the playoffs. Seattle did this for years. KC and NE have been top 5 scoring defenses for the past 5-7 years. Defense wins playoff football.

To get back on topic here.  Many of the "national media" is pretty much penciling in 2 AFC South teams into the playoffs (Titans and Jaguars).  The "no media respect" people should probably back off a bit.

There's still a lot of football to play and it should be a game at a time.
