Maybe somehow Belichick is so upset regarding being forced to trade Garoppolo, he decided to quit at the last minute.

Perhaps this means McDaniels gets to coach Brady and still has a shot at a Super Bowl.

I don't see how the Colts got screwed by the rule.

That rule didn't make McDaniels change his mind about taking the Colts job, nor did it force the Colts to commit to a guy who wasn't willing to commit to them for whatever reason.
