Compensatory picks

#1

I don't know if this has been posted in other forums, but the NFL has awarded the compensatory picks in the draft.

5-170 Bengals
5-171 Cowboys
5-172 Packers
5-173 Cowboys

6-207 Packers
6-208 Cowboys
6-209 Chiefs

6-211 Texans

The link you provided has discussion. In that, one poster provided a link to a compensatory draft pick cancellation chart at overthecap.com.

Perhaps you can evaluate it and provide some discussion?

I didn't go there, but I recall looking into this years ago. There's a whole formula for figuring it out, but to get comp picks it starts with couting how many more FAs you lose than how many you acquired. Since the Jaguars acquired more than they lost, they're not about to get a pick.

Teams that lay off free agents are awarded. Teams that are active in free agency are not.

All the years the Jaguars boasted of superior cap space accrued and did we ever receive a compensatory pick?

Did we ever lose anyone of value in those years?

I can think of a few names:

DT John Henderson
DT Marcus Stroud
OT Khalif Barnes
TE Kyle Brady
RB Fred Taylor
LB Daryl Smith
S Gerald Sensabaugh

I suppose there was red tape and/or a free agent of some lesser talent level signed which prevented us from a compensatory pick. (maybe we got compensatory pick(s) and I never noticed)

It doesn't count players cut or traded, only expiring contracts I believe.

Our signings are the top two compensatory picks.

Henderson - cut, doesn't count
Stroud - traded, doesn't count
Barnes - free agent, but only signed a 1 year 1.2 mil contract, which is negligible in comp picks
Brady - free agent, don't know dollars but signed a 2 year contract that probably wasn't much at his age then
Taylor - cut
Smith - free agent, but only signed a 1 year 1.125 mil contract
Senseabaugh - free agent, but only signed a 1 year 1.815 mil contact

So yeah, if those are the big time players we lost during that time it's no wonder we never received a comp pick.

This year we're potentially losing Marqise Lee and Poz in free agency who both might factor in with big FA contracts. Signing Pugh would offset one of these. I don't think re-signing ARob would count against us though, but signing another TE like ASJ would.

The last time the Jaguars had a comp pick was Scotty McGee in 2010. Dave Caldwell has never been awarded a comp pick while GM for the Jaguars.

Gahd! Can the guy do anything right?!
I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!

To be clear, this does not necessarily reflect a failure on Caldwell's part.

He's only been GM for five years.

The first few years he was here, he was purging the roster of Gene Smith's "players," and tot he limited extent possible, he signed some free agents.  That is a recipe for not getting any compensatory picks.

Now his first draft class became free agents last year.  His first draft class wasn't that great, and the team signed free agents like Barry Church and Calais Campbell.

Once again, not necessarily conditions under which compensatory picks could be had.

However, I don't see the team being particularly active in free agency this year, and the team could lose guys like Marqise Lee and Aaron Colvin this year, and in the future, a guy like Fowler.
