You are thinking of Tashaun Gipson.  He would have $1.6 million in dead money if cut next year.  However, he also has a salary over $9 million.  As such, when you do the math, cutting him would save the Jaguars over $7.4 million off the salary cap next year.  He's definitely a candidate to be a salary cap casualty.

Barry Church has a salary over $6 million in 2019 with no dead money if we cut him.  He's also currently 30 years old.  Again, another candidate to be a salary cap casualty in 2019.

While safety isn't a need for the 2018 team, it definitely could help us with our salary cap position in 2019 and beyond assuming the guy we took is capable of being a legitimate starter.
