Let's learn English

#1

The many misused words on message boards are at times hilarious. I think a class room thread is needed. Please add to this, I will start with lesson #1.

Then vs. Than (In short review)

Then = a time
Than = a comparison

Example:

Then (time) - I am going to down one last shot of Jack, and then I am going to fall up the down escalator.

Than (comparison) - I should have taken the elevator rather than the escalator.

Test: (Multiple choice)

1) Don't drink than drive.
2) Don't drink then drive.

I saw the winner in the comments section of a news site - "pre-Madonna". Hyphenated, even.

I remember when journalists and editors proofread their articles accurately.

It was "pre-Madonna."

To, two and too.

A related issue, not quite on the level we're discussing, but still annoying, are abbreviations popularized by the apparently exhausting practice of instant messaging that have bled into other formats, like this message board. Is it that much trouble to key in the extra strokes required to use your, instead of ur?

Or the insidious usage of gonna and wanna. I'll use it on occasion to inflect a casual or humorous mood, but there, they're, their use is becoming more mainstream.

A room of class. Hmm. Who would have ever thought this message board would attempt to walk that line? Not a realistic endeavor. Nope.

Overuse of commas can be annoying, too, [BLEEP].
