If you don't realize that there are about ten people who, together, have near total control over which politicians should be discussed during the ordinary news cycle, and which should be portrayed as fringe candidates, you haven't been paying attention.
An example from 2016: Trump, Jeb, Cruz, and Rubio were deemed newsworthy.  The others were not.  Jeb got all the coverage he could have wanted, but he put people to sleep with it. Rubio and Cruz were a little better, but Trump was the only one who took his coverage and, like a showman, followed the "always leave them wanting more" principle.
Every election cycle plays put like this.  Only three or four candidates get a shot in the media, and one  of them makes the most of his chances.
Right now we have a lot of Democratic candidates, but it's pretty clear that not all of them are going to get their fair share of coverage.
