Bernie got screwed by the Democratic party and Hillary last time around and people know it, so they may back him in masses as a way to get him retribution. Biden is the most moderate Democrat in the field (with real name recognition) and he is very respected by politicians on both sides of the aisle. Personally, I don't care if candidates are black, white, red, brown, yellow or plaid. The same with age. The most popular politician with the most appealing ideas is gonna win the nomination. Bernie's ideas are more progressive and are gonna appeal to younger Democrats, while Biden's moderate views are gonna appeal to middle aged and older Democrats. I doubt anyone else in the field has a chance.

There were two kinds of people who voted boerne last time.
One was true believers in his vision for Democratic socialism. Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris share a lot of that vision, so some people in this group will vote for them instead of Bernie this time.
Two was people who just wanted anyone but Hillary. Obviously none of the candidates are Hillary this time.  
No one is going to get a majority at the democratic convention until a lot of candidates drop out, so Bernie does have a chance. But I don't think it's a very good chance.
As for Biden, I doubt he runs.
